Prospecting for new antibiotics

The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant bacteria has created an urgent need for novel antibiotics. Writing in Nature, Hung and colleagues describe a new strategy that simultaneously identifies antibacterial agents with activity in cellular screens and predicts their mechanism of action, which they demonstrate by identifying anti-tuberculosis agents, including compounds in novel classes.
