Can Function Keys on Magic Keyboard be configured for different iMac models?

A friend needed a new magic keyboard for her 2017 iMac. I gave her the keyboard from my 2021 iMac and she is a little upset that the function keys (volume, screen brightness, etc.) don't work the way they are supposed to. Is this a permanent problem or can the keyboard be configured somehow?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide,

Jon

For MAC - Fix this problem easily in just 2 steps! Click the apple icon (top left corner) and select system preferences. Click on the keyboard ICON. Step 1: select the "keyboard" tab. Un-check/remove check on "Use F1, F2, etc. keys and standard function keys." Step 2: select the "shortcuts" tab. In the first column select "mission control". In the second column make sure "show desktop" and "show dashboard" are unchecked/not checked, allowing the F11 and F12 function keys to control what they are supposed to, the volume. Close system preferences. That's it! You're done!

Have a great day!

Sadly your Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, is not fully compatible with her earlier 2017 Intel Mac model.

see "Compatible" at > Magic Keyboard with Touch ID for Mac models with Apple silicon - US English - Apple

If your friend is upset with your Keyboard, then she needs to replace her Keyboard with the correct one.

see > Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad for Mac models - Apple

and/or > Magic Keyboard - US English - Apple

Jon,

All you need to do is look at the system requirements for the keyboard and that will answer ALL of your questions. Giving technology stuff to folks without doing due diligence usually ends up in frustration for the recipient. I think you are learning that lesson now!

If you cannot find the system requirements, you (or the friend) can call AppleCare. If you happen to be in the USA that number is 800-275-2273, outside the USA please click Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support
