Why is my RK Keyboard causing USB Accessories Disabled error?

I have the "USB Accessories Disabled Unplug the accessory using too much power to re-enable USB devices", I have been using an externally powered USB hub and this issue is new. Only occurs when I plug in my RK Keyboard to the USB charging cable. The cable is connected to the self powered hub and there is no issue with the Hub power as it is still charging the Macbook.

Like with others, the error is being triggered when coming back to my office after being away for lunch or the evening--so the problem occurs either during or coming out of sleep.

The error is being triggered by the Samsung SSD. This disk has been running for a couple of years as a Time Machine drive with no disconnects over multiple macOS updates.

When I swap out the Samsung USB-C cable (900mA, 10Gb/s) for an Anker high-speed USB-C cable the problem persists.

When I swap out the Samsung USB-C cable for an Apple charging cable (500mA, 480Mb/s) the problem seems to go away.

Seems like the Samsung SSD is using more power when it is waking up again.

The Brydge dock is supplying power to the laptop via the USB-C cable, not the other way around. The laptop battery shows as charging and is charging at a normal rate.

I have found that some adapters/docks/hubs don't always allow the full power of the charger to reach the laptop. I have found this even with the Apple multiport Adapter.

I'm currently working with Brydge and also giving this 'slow' cable some time to see if that is the fix. If so, that's pretty gross. From the data I've been gathering this is also looking like an Apple problem.

Hard to say as it may be a Brydge problem. The dock is adding more accessories to a single USB-C port which is only capable of handling X amount of power. Sounds like the Brydge dock isn't providing enough power to all of the connected devices when the system is waking up. If you connect the Samsung SSD directly to the laptop and don't have this issue, then it is more likely a Brydge problem. If you do have a problem with the Samsung SSD connected directly to the laptop, then it may be a Samsung problem. Very tricky to troubleshoot since you would need to see the current being used for that port.

UPDATE: I'm not accustomed to seeing firmware updates for peripherals but I saw that Samsung released one for their T7 SSDs.

I installed it via their "Magician" software. I'm now 5 days into stable operation with this patch and the following System Settings which I had implemented earlier in the troubleshooting process:

  • System Settings -> Battery -> Options -> Put hard disks to sleep when possible: NEVER
  • System Settings -> Battery -> Options -> Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off: SELECTED

There is also a setting in the Magician software for "Auto Refresh" which is set to 10 minutes by default.

The Magician software is complaining that it is "Recommended to connect another USB port for better performance", even on a 10Gb/s cable, but its clearly fine.

Many adapters, hubs, docks will not allow the full power of the charger to reach the laptop, plus only some a specially marked USB-C port will allow a power adapter pass through to the laptop. This shouldn't affect the power available on the USB ports.

This error message indicates your USB devices are trying to pull too much power from the laptop to power those USB devices. Make sure the connected USB devices are not connected to a power-in only USB-C port on the hub since many times a USB-C marked for power in will not allow data transfers.

Either you have one too many USB devices connected, or one of those USB devices is defective & trying to pull too much power. If you have too many USB devices, then make sure to get a self powered USB hub which has its own power adapter which gets plugged into an electrical outlet.

MacBook Pro M3, Sonoma 14.4

I have two monitors plugged in. One via HDMI and has power going directly to the wall, never has issues. The second is a Lenovo 32" that has power going to the wall and uses the USB-C for connecting to MAC. Constantly get USB power warning and half the time I need to unplug the Lenovo monitor and plug it back in to get it to work.

Sounds like a hardware issue of some sort.... you may have a bad USB-C port. You should have Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider examine your laptop, power adapter, and charging cable.

Edit: I'm assuming you are connecting the charger directly to the laptop.

I'm having the same error on my 2019 MacBook Pro on the 14.4.1. My MacBook doesn't charge anymore when connected because my usb accessories are disabled (nothing except the charger is plugged in). Sometimes it charges when I use the lowest usb c port of my hyperdrive thunderbolt dock. (I'm using the official charger and cable and never used anything else). Does anyone know why this is happening?

CalDigit Thunderbolt 4 Element Hub (powered)

Anker 555 USB-C Hub (8-in-1) (unpowered)

The Anker is only connected to my older 4K monitor via HDMI as the other hub has no HDMI port.

@woodmeister50

I also have an older Epson GT-S50 scanner attached via a 12ft USB-A cable, but the scanner is almost always powered off. Can that be a problem even when off? It's attached to my unpowered hub. Hasn't been a problem in the past.

I've got the same problem with MBP M3 Pro. I've only connected the MBP with the external monitor Lenovo Thinkvision P27-30h by usb C port with only two Logitech receivers (Mouse, KB) plug in the USB ports of the monitor. I don't think 2 receivers use too much power as the pop-up said. But it's strange that although the system informs that USB is disabled, I can continue using the mouse, KB, and the Monitor without any issues. This should be a software's rather than a hardware's problem, hope there is a fix soon.

Thanks. Your comment reminded me that I did, in fact, plug the SSD directly into the MacBook Pro and not have problems. BUT, like I say, I didn't have any problems using a hub prior to 2(?) macOS updates ago.

I also did get a replacement hub from Brydge that has the same problem. It could just be a design flaw with Brydge's hardware, or a problem that the SSD has developed due to age, but the problems seem to have aligned more with macOS changes than hardware changes.

I had read elsewhere on the Internet that there are problems with encrypted disks disconnecting randomly in recent versions of macOS. Since I need to reformat this SSD anyway due to all the disconnects I might format it as unencrypted to see if that helps.
