Why is my RK Keyboard causing USB Accessories Disabled error?

I have the "USB Accessories Disabled Unplug the accessory using too much power to re-enable USB devices", I have been using an externally powered USB hub and this issue is new. Only occurs when I plug in my RK Keyboard to the USB charging cable. The cable is connected to the self powered hub and there is no issue with the Hub power as it is still charging the Macbook.

Running Sonoma 14.4 on my M2 14" MacBook Pro. Sonoma: Apple's answer to Windows Vista. I too am just now getting this silly notification. I have changed nothing at all: same USB hub, same devices, same configuration. And now I'm being told this?? Sonoma is so darn buggy Apple can't keep up with it all. I don't know what troubleshooting I should enact since I haven't changed anything. I'll watch this thread for ideas because I'm stumped.

Thanks,

Force

I get this message intermittently when coming out of sleep as well (MacBook Pro 16" m3 Max 2024). I have 2 Thunderbolt docks plugged into the MacBook. The first is OWC 10 Port Pro Dock (supplies 85W of power by the way) and the other is the Caldigit Thunderbolt 4 Element hub (supplies 60W of power).

Into these devices I do have some USB devices plugged - keyboard (SteelSeries), mouse (StealSeries), Audio (StealSeries) Stream Deck, Timemachine hard drive, Thunderbolt SSD. These are the same USB devices (less the 2 Thunderbolt hubs which are new) I had plugged into my 27" Intel iMC (2019) in which I never got this error.

I've tried moving the USB devices around, and even adding a powered USB 3.2 hub to plug them into, but still get the errors sometimes (if it was a reliable error to recreate this would be far easier).

It feels a bit like this is a software handshake error - that is when coming out of sleep it likely takes a moment from everything to activate and communicate, and that sometimes results in things being momentarily beyond limits triggering the error. Please note that NONE of the devices are actually disabled - they are all working when I get this error, and nothing needs to be replugged into to activate it.

I have this issue on my Macbook Pro M2 and Macbook Pro M3 with a Caldigit Thunderbolt 4 Element hub. Mixed cables around, different ports, even nothing plugged and still get this incessant notification.

I've updated the firmware on the Caldigit too but no change.

Also all devices that are plugged in work just fine!

OS: Somona 14.3.1

Hub: Caldigit Thunderbolt 4 Element hub

Devices plugged in (although issue persists when no devices plugged in, and the devices work)

  • Elgato Stream deck
  • USB mic
  • 5k monitor
  • Sony webcam

I'm getting this error message intermittently all of a sudden (typically after booting, opening the laptop, or waking from sleep). I've tried an SMC and PRAM reset but it's made no difference.

I think the message may have come up with nothing plugged into my USB ports once or twice, but the only things that are usually plugged in are an SSD and a HP monitor (and sometimes another monitor via HDMI), which obviously shouldn't be using 'too much power' and aren't new devices. Weirdly, all USB ports seem to actually be working despite the message—I've had no trouble plugging in the monitors or SSD.

I'm wondering the if system is (incorrectly) registering a power surge on waking and triggering the error message, but then immediately reactivating the ports when it checks again and finds no problem. The error message has to be manually closed, rather than closing itself once the issue resolves, so I'm thinking that it's probably already redundant by the time it renders on screen in this case.

Perhaps the recent flare up of the issue is actually that the error message is being triggered too quickly and not accounting for waking, or is no longer self-closing, rather than an actual issue with the USB ports?

Device is a MBP M2 2023 running Somona 14.4.1

Having the same issue with the following:

  • 2023 Macbook Pro M3 16"
  • macOS 14.5
  • Brydge Stone Pro TB4 powered dock
    • Apple Cinema Display USB hub connected via USB-A
    • Apple Cinema Display's Displayport connected via USB-C adapter
    • Samsung T7 SSD (USB-C)
    • Yeti Blue mic (USB-A)

Like with others, the error is being triggered when coming back to my office after being away for lunch or the evening--so the problem occurs either during or coming out of sleep.

The Brydge dock is supplying power to the laptop via the USB-C cable, not the other way around. The laptop battery shows as charging and is charging at a normal rate.

The error is being triggered by the Samsung SSD. This disk has been running for a couple of years as a Time Machine drive with no disconnects over multiple macOS updates.

When I swap out the Samsung USB-C cable (900mA, 10Gb/s) for an Anker high-speed USB-C cable the problem persists.

When I swap out the Samsung USB-C cable for an Apple charging cable (500mA, 480Mb/s) the problem seems to go away.

I'm currently working with Brydge and also giving this 'slow' cable some time to see if that is the fix. If so, that's pretty gross. From the data I've been gathering this is also looking like an Apple problem.

I don't know; many people seem to be having this issue suddenly popping up recently. It seems like a software/OS Update bug to me...

Very hard to say since not enough people are performing proper troubleshooting steps to provide any conclusions or describing their setup in detail. There are so many system variations & hardware people are using....all unknowns to us on this forum. More than likely one or more connected devices are causing a problem.

A macOS update could have changed how the USB ports work and some devices may no longer be fully compatible especially when mixed with another connected device. A lot of third party peripherals don't exactly adhere very well to standards, plus I find many people seem to like to use cheap no name brands instead of quality accessories (including cables). Even if a macOS update changed things, more than likely a third party device is ultimately at fault. People need to identify which external device or devices are causing their problem here. People will continue to experience the problem until they identify the device(s). No one else can even begin to help anyone until this is done.

Not sure if you will see this, but was there an explanation that made sense? I’ve read through the stream of comments and the only one that makes sense to me is that it is a glitch in the software. I change nothing (ignore the warning) and everything seems to continue to work just fine. I figure it is just part of the love/hate relationship I have with Apple.

@hwtech Does it matter if the laptop is drawing power from the hub? This problem started for me without any change in my peripherals and seemed related to the last Sonoma update.

Running an M1 MBP driving 5K and 4K ext monitors via two hubs plus a couple of external powered HDDs and a Wacom pad. The MBP is connected first to a powered hub, which is then daisy-chained to an unpowered hub. I also tried separately powering the laptop via the MagSafe cable without benefit.

Does an unpowered hub draw power from a powered hub between it and the laptop? Or directly from the laptop?

The warning pops up frequently then goes away for a tens of minutes and isn’t related to sleep/wake of the laptop.

This sounds like a bug but I guess I should do a NVRAM and SMC reset just to be sure after removing all peripherals. Then add them back one-by-one.
