- [Instructor] Since the beginning of the internet, text-based chat has been a popular use of the global network. While the first messages were delivered using email or bulletin boards, real-time chat became popular early on, starting with technologies like IRC, or Internet Relay Chat. Later on, free chat applications like ICQ, AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Chat and MSN Messenger, became popular as well. And as mobile devices really took off, chat or messaging apps replaced text messaging for a lot of people as well. Most chat technologies used plain text in the beginning because the tools used to create secure messages were a little burdensome, and frankly, for a lot of services, security was an afterthought. But chats often contain some of our most private and sensitive communications between our friends, family, co-workers and others.
