- [Instructor] I know you work hard on your Photoshop files, and so it's important to know how to save them so that you can preserve your work. Here's what I suggest you do about saving. As you're working on a file, save it from time to time in the PSD format. PSD stands for "Photoshop Document." That's the native file format of Photoshop, and the reason to save in that format is that the PSD format retains all of Photoshop's proprietary features that you may have added to your image, like adjustment layers or layer effects or smart objects, or even layers and some other file formats. Don't retain those as separate editable items in the file. For example, if you were to save this file as a JPEG instead of a PSD, it would not save the adjustment layer that we added to it as a separate accessible layer. Instead, everything would be flattened down into one layer and that's because the JPEG format just doesn't support layers…
