Aquatics Director

POSITION SUMMARY:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manages all functions of the Aquatics Department including aquatic safety, hazardous materials, pool mechanics/maintenance, and aquatics programs at both the Walhalla City Pool and the Foothills Area YMCA. Creates and schedules swim lessons, water fitness classes, and oversees competitive swim team, summer swim league, and 3rdgrade swim program.
  • Provides direct supervision for the Head Swim Team Coach and oversees all staff members within the aquatics department.
  • Assesses program success and develop new programs to ensure that programs are reflecting the needs of the community.
  • Leads the hiring, training, and supervision of staff within the aquatics department. Hire, train, supervise and evaluate all staff under your direct supervision in a consistent and timely manner.
  • Ensures that all staff maintain required certifications and are aware of the expiration dates of their current certifications.
  • Organizes and conducts aquatics staff meetings as needed including required monthly lifeguard in service training.
  • Defines department targets and evaluates performance around achieving goals while motivating staff including observing swim instructors and team staff to assure program quality on a regular basis.
  • Ensures timecards are completed and verify hours worked by staff.
  • Instructs lessons as needed. Lifeguards as needed.
  • Performs audits of pool systems and equipment. Ensures safety protocols are being followed in accordance with YMCA, American Red Cross and state requirements.
  • Serves as the manager-on-duty when necessary, and assists in the maintenance of clean, attractive, safe, and well-maintained facilities.
  • Continually communicates with and informs leadership staff about YMCA programs and current issues.
  • Develops committed relationships by sharing knowledge of programs, events, and resources with members and participants throughout the facility and within the community when representing the YMCA.
  • Works with the Marketing Director to ensure all aquatics program information is up to date and is shared with the community in a timely manner through our websites, social media pages, and monthly newsletters.
  • Responsible for the development, control, and monitoring of Aquatics Department budgets, and ensures all budgets meet year-end outcomes.
  • Communicates with members/parents regarding concerns, changes, credits or transfers. Ensures all dues/fess are paid in a timely manner for all aquatics programs.
  • Must role model YMCA core values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring in all aspects of job and relationships with staff, members, and program participants.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in pool management and operations preferred and a history of aquatics programming experience.
  • Must have current certifications in First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22), CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Oxygen Administration. Current Lifeguard Certification (YMCA of the USA or Red Cross). Current YMCA of the USA Swim Lesson Instructor Certification or Red Cross Water Safety instructor (YMCA certification within 6 months). Active Pool Operators Certification preferred, must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Proven supervisory skills in hiring, training, evaluating, and motivating staff and volunteers, as well as developing an effective staff team
  • Professional demeanor, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work well with the public, staff, and volunteers.
  • Proven fiscal management skills, knowledge of and expertise in aquatics programming
  • Within 60 days of hire, completion of Child Abuse Prevention and Bloodborne Pathogens training.
  • YMCA Team Leader certification preferred

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise program activities.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
  • Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
