Director of Engineering – R&D

BiomeSense is a start-up working to enable a generational leap in human gut microbiome sampling and analysis, supercharging discovery, and enabling development of microbiome-based precision medicine. Development is focused on two main innovations, hardware to enable daily sampling of gut microbiomes as a routine exercise, and AI-driven analytics to leverage these novel datasets for biomarker discovery.

The director of engineering will contribute to the development, validation, and integration of novel systems that will automate microbial DNA extraction and purification. The director will lead new product development activities including: planning and executing verification testing, resolving build issues, scoping and planning product revisions, and designing for reliability, cost, assembly, and maintenance. This role will report to the CTO and work in a leadership role to build a team that is responsible for the various workflows critical to the company’s success.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the development and validation of novel approaches to automate laboratory protocols (e.g. microbial DNA extraction)
• Scope, plan, direct, and execute product verification testing and determine next steps for all issues
• Build and lead a team of engineers to determine best integration/systems engineering techniques
• Scope and plan new prototype revisions, including designing for manufacturing, costing-down, production transfer, and pilot builds
• Drive the identification, vetting, and management of product development and contract manufacturing partners
• Develop detailed new product development plans, timelines, and budgets

Preferred Skills and Competencies:

• Expertise with SolidWorks and complex assemblies
• Proficient in the execution of DFM strategies
• Experience in medical, diagnostic, laboratory, or consumer device development and/or machine manufacturing
• Experience with design controls and quality management systems (e.g. GLP)
• Highly flexible and willing to rapidly adapt to changing conditions
• 5+ years’ experience in relevant mechanical engineering and/or manufacturing engineering
