Emergency Department (ED) Director

The Staff Pad is seeking an Emergency Department director to join a hospital outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Emergency Department (ED) Director is responsible for the 24-hour coordination and supervision of the ED to ensure optimal patient care services. This leadership role involves guiding clinical excellence, managing personnel, overseeing fiscal accountability, and fostering positive relationships with other departments, physicians, and hospital guests. The ED Director actively participates in patient care and contributes to hospital-wide initiatives to achieve both departmental and organizational goals. All duties are performed in alignment with the hospital's values of caring, respect, and professional excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Coordination:
  • Oversee the daily operations of the Emergency Department, ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care.
  • Provide leadership that promotes clinical excellence and best practices in emergency medicine.
  • Coordinate with other hospital departments to ensure seamless patient care and efficient use of resources.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, policies, and procedures.
  • Personnel Management:
  • Supervise and mentor ED staff, fostering a positive work environment that encourages professional development.
  • Manage staffing levels to ensure adequate coverage for patient care needs.
  • Address personnel issues, including conflict resolution and staff evaluations.
  • Promote staff development through training, education, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Fiscal Accountability:
  • Oversee the financial performance of the ED, ensuring that budgetary goals are met.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve operational efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Participate in budget planning and resource allocation in collaboration with hospital leadership.
  • Patient Care & Quality Improvement:
  • Participate in direct patient care as needed, ensuring adherence to evidence-based practices.
  • Monitor patient outcomes and implement quality improvement initiatives to enhance care delivery.
  • Maintain awareness of age-specific principles of growth and development to meet each patient's unique needs.
  • Communication & Collaboration:
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the ED and other hospital departments, physicians, and external partners.
  • Keep the Chief Nursing Officer informed of progress, potential challenges, and strategic initiatives within the ED.
  • Facilitate effective communication among ED staff, patients, families, and other stakeholders.

Position Qualifications

  • Education:
  • Graduate of an accredited, State Board of Nursing approved nursing program is required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or a related field is preferred.
  • A Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) is desired but not required.
  • Relevant experience combined with demonstrated leadership abilities may be substituted for the degree.
  • Experience:
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience, preferably in a variety of acute care settings.
  • Experience in patient care management and emergency department leadership is preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and the capacity to work effectively under stressful situations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to manage interpersonal relationships, promote conflict resolution, and facilitate staff development.
  • Licenses/Certificates:
  • Must be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support), ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support), TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course), and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certifications are required.
  • Specialty certifications such as CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) and executive or clinical certifications are preferred.
