Role Summary

Rowan Digital Infrastructure is looking for a Director of Sustainable Practices to lead Rowan’s sustainability practice in the built environment, specifically establishing and meeting goals of the sustainability program to include measurable and progressive decarbonization of all Rowan projects.


The successful candidate will have an advanced understanding of the concept and root goals of sustainability including a proven track record with large industrial/data center or healthcare projects that have resulted in decarbonization of the project as the result of implemented sustainable practices.


Travel: Ability to travel up to (20%) for company gatherings or to project sites.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Our client is our North Star. As a result, this role will serve as client liaison for project teams with respect to both Rowan and customer sustainability initiatives and bring value to our clients by bringing sustainable initiatives and solutions that result in decarbonization.
  • Drive the organization to good decisions through data driven evaluation. Foster, promote and lead Rowan’s sustainability initiatives specific to the built environment amongst diverse project teams. This includes bringing established sustainable practices and evaluating, derisking and establishing advancements in the sustainable discipline.
  • Build processes and people to ensure adherence to Article 9 program requirements and any future changes. As a result, lead the implementation of the reporting program for Article 9 and all other sustainable reporting requirements for the organization.
  • Maintain grasp of jurisdictional specific mandates with respect to water and energy use. Prepare briefings to overall Rowan team with respect to legislative changes which may impact the ability to deliver our product.
  • Leads the external consultant facing effort to promote product quality with respect to Rowan’s sustainability initiatives.
  • Guides and advises project teams, providing sustainable design input to ensure consistent and high-quality design.
  • Establishes expectations with external consultant teams with respect to Article 9 compliance and other sustainability initiatives.
  • Responsible for preparing work order contracts for external design consultants with respect to sustainability related scopes of work.
  • Conduct technical reviews of the work product of external design consultants.
  • Serve as the Rowan representative with external industry professional organizations which includes the authoring and joint authoring of white papers, conference speaking and attendance at industry events of strategic importance.
  • Prepare and deliver sustainability program briefs and project specific updates to Rowan C Suite and Board of Directors. Interface as necessary with the Global Head of Sustainability and Impact Investment at Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners.
  • Work with Rowan Lead Architect and Lead Engineer in the further development of the Rowan Form-Factor product. Encourages exploration and innovation to achieve project design excellence.


Education, Skills, and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or master’s degree in architecture, engineering or environmental sciences or equivalent experience in real estate, data center or construction industry.
  • 10+ years of experience in a digital infrastructure, data center or technology organization specifically in a leadership role associated with sustainable practices in the built environment.
  • Advanced understanding of the concept and root goals of sustainability including a proven track record with large industrial/data center or healthcare projects that have resulted in decarbonization of the project as the result of implemented sustainable practices.
  • Mastery of integrated design methods, materials application and the ability to forge manufacturer-supplier relationships specific to sustainable solutions.
  • Experience leading the organization to evaluate, de-risk and implement new, cutting-edge sustainable practices.
  • Direct interface at the C-level and private equity type partners presenting and determining the optimal sustainable decisions for the organization.
  • Direct experience with sustainable certification programs specific to the built environment (Green Globes, LEED, BREEAM, Article 9) and their applicability to data center and mission critical projects.
  • Ability to think both tactically and strategically with respect to desired outcomes.
  • Possess a thorough understanding of project work plans, schedules and budgets.
  • Proven ability to prioritize amongst multiple project assignments in maintaining schedule and prior commitments.
