Summar

yThe Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will strategically manage the Institute’s financial matters and will have the primary day-to-day responsibility for planning, implementing, managing, and controlling all financial-related activities. The CFO also participates in long-range strategic planning activities, leads implementation of those aspects of the plan pertaining to finance, and ensures effective integration and efficient operations in support of Sanford Burnham Prebys’ scientific mission and initiatives

As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, the CFO is accountable for the financial and risk management operations of the Institute, including the development of a financial strategy, metrics tied to that strategy, and the ongoing development and monitoring of control systems designed to preserve Institute assets and report accurate financial result

The CFO regularly interfaces with the Board of Trustees and its Committees, in particular, Finance, Audit, and Compensation, and serves in an officer capacity as its Treasurer. The CFO serves as a representative and spokesperson for the Institute to external organizations and individua

  • eam.Develop and maintain effective systems for planning and managing financial resources, including developing and maintaining a long-term financial plan, strategic financial forecasting, and collaborative budget
  • ing.Create and implement financial management policies and strategies that maximize revenue and minimize cost, as well as effectively manage the Institute’s long-term investments and debt/capital structure while linking financial analytics to operational goals and strateg
  • ies.Oversee the preparation and communication of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and ensure timely reporting and updates to the CEO, Board of Directors, and other key stakehold
  • ers.Ensure that financial transactions, policies, and procedures meet the short- and long-term business objectives and are conducted in accordance with regulations, accounting principles, and standa
  • rds.Actively seek out “best practices” for handling institutional issues, including operational efficiencies, cross-departmental initiatives, and reporting to
  • ols.Develop financial strategy, benchmarks, and ongoing development and monitoring of control syst
  • ems.Ensure the integrity of the internal financial control struct

Education and/or Experi

  • ence:A Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, or Finance is required. An MBA or CPA designation is prefe
  • rred.Expert-level understanding of financial strategies, budgeting, forecasting, and repor
  • ting.Proven ability in financial modeling, performance measurement, and financial analysis to drive fiscal health and inform decision-m
  • akingAt least ten years of experience in managing the fiscal operations of a complex, well-run organization is requ
  • ired.Experience managing in a non-profit organization is preferred, and specifically, experience with a non-profit, life-sciences-focused research institute or university department/school is highly prefe
  • rred.Knowledge of major sources of institutional funding is requ
  • ired.Outstanding, proven management skills are required, with solid skills in setting annual goals for performance and motivating and monitoring staff prog
