Job Description

The Styles desk is looking for a creative and ambitious reporter to produce quick turn news stories and short features about the people, places and ideas that shape fashion now. You are well-versed in style and fashion, and have developed relationships with designers and brands. You should be ready to cover runway shows and red carpet events — and be able to spot trends before our competitors get to them.

As a reporter at The Times, you will be constantly developing sources and chasing scoops. Your stories may take the form of traditional reported pieces, but you will also write explainers, visual-first and interactive stories and profiles. Your on-the-ground reporting will provide readers with a complete understanding of an event or character, and you are eager to experiment and engage with readers via various platforms. This role requires creativity, understanding of deadlines and the ability to work with a team as you will work with editors to develop specific timely storylines.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities


  • Report and file several stories per week
  • Monitor news related to fashion, brands, trends
  • Conceive of fresh and compelling angles on news and pitch them to editors
  • Collaborate with visual editors on assignments
  • Develop stories that include a range of voices and perspectives
  • Cultivate sources
  • Participate in audio and video storytelling, as needed
  • Adhere to The Times’s editorial standards
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
  • This role reports to Deputy Editor, Styles


Basic Qualifications


  • 6 + years as a reporter
  • Experience in a fast-paced news organization
  • Proven track record of breaking news
  • Highly skilled in reporting and writing for a variety of story forms


Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience at fashion shows
  • Conversant in fashion history
  • Enthusiasm for fashion

The annual base pay range for this role is between $111,049.64 and $125,000.00.
