General Accounting Manager

Dykema Gossett PLLC, a leading national law firm, is recruiting for a General Accounting Manager to perform general accounting activities, including the preparation, maintenance and reconciliation of ledger accounts and financial statements. This role works within specific guidelines and procedures; applies advanced technical knowledge to solve moderately complex problems; receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines approach, resources, schedules and goals. Oversees processes related to the monthly cycle, records, analyzes and reports accounting transactions and ensures the integrity of accounting records for completeness, accuracy and ensuring compliance with financial regulations and accounting principles. This position manages accounting team members, prepares financial reports, including forecasting, budgeting and analyzing variations from budgets.

Responsibilities

  • Gather data and prepare financial reports, such as balance sheets, profit-and-loss statements and capital expenditure schedules. Conduct thorough financial statement analysis, providing insights and recommendations to the Financial Controller and CFO.
  • Oversee and manage the preparation and review of monthly bank reconciliations for all accounts. Investigate and resolve discrepancies promptly, ensuring all transactions are recorded accurately.
  • Oversee and coordinate month-end and year-end close processes, including the preparation and review of journal entries and account reconciliations to ensure accurate and timely financial statements.
  • Conduct internal audits to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with accounting standards, policies, and regulations. Develop and implement audit plans and coordinate with various departments to ensure adherence to internal controls.
  • Manage partner account postings and prepare monthly reconciliation. Record year-end entries accruing partner final distributions and bonus pool.
  • Perform detailed balance sheet account analysis and reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and proper classification of accounts.
  • Analyzes and prepares statutory accounts, financial statements and reports.
  • Responsible for hiring, training and supervising assigned accounting team members.
  • Coach, mentor, and lead direct reports to achieve goals and deadlines while encouraging positive success-oriented thinking.
  • Coordinate and support external auditors during the annual financial audit process, providing necessary documentation and explanations as required.
  • Assist preparation of the annual budgets.
  • Coordinate processes related to outstanding checks and dormant client funds to prepare for escheatment to various State Departments.
  • Collaborate with the finance team on the timely resolution of outstanding issues.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of general ledger, balance sheets, income statements, and financial reporting principles.
  • Excellent accounting software user and administration skills including experience with automated accounting and billing systems, accounting software and databases.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite; advanced technical skills using Excel, required; experience with business management systems such as Chrome River, Aderant, and SQL systems preferred.
  • Excellent communication, time management, interpersonal, and organizational skills; attention to detail essential.
  • Proactive, inquisitive, and analytical problem solver able to exercise independent judgment in selecting methods and techniques for resolution.
  • Ability to collaborate and cross-team with all administrative areas and promote a positive work environment that embraces the diversity and skills of all members.
  • Excellent client service skills with the ability to work cross-functionally with a spirit of cooperation.
  • Forward-thinker who is open to new ideas and a desire to try new techniques and processes.
  • Demonstrate initiative with proven leadership skills; potential to assume more responsibility.
  • Requires flexibility and ability to prioritize workload effectively.

Education / Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA Preferred.
  • Must possess excellent accounting skills and minimum of five years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
  • At least three years of management experience in a client-driven professional environment, conducting financial analysis and providing recommendations around analysis.
