Position Overview

Proterra is looking for a talented Systems Engineering Manager with capabilities in hardware, software and controls to lead our Systems Engineering and Cell Engineering teams. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, team oriented, and is seeking an atmosphere conducive to learning and growth. The ideal candidate should have experience with systems engineering tools, simulation tools, and should be comfortable working hands-on in the lab as needed.

About The Role – You Will

  • Develop a vision for Systems Engineering at Proterra, including architecture, requirements, data, and cell engineering
  • Build & manage a Systems Engineering team to effectively manage the organizations needs across the architecture, requirements, data, and cell engineering domains
  • Define, manage, and release requirements for development of battery systems, as well as supporting ancillary components and subsystems.
  • Support test and validation teams with the verification and validation of system requirements.
  • Support definition of battery system architecture, battery diagnostics, and battery algorithm development.
  • Support the selection, integration, and validation of battery cells into our battery systems through requirements definition, characterization, and algorithm development.
  • Support development of DFMEA, hazard and risk assessment, technical safety concept, and other safety analysis documentation.
  • Support technical design leads with the translation of system requirements into the design of battery systems and components.
  • Support execution of characterization tests, post-processing and analysis of test data, and generation of test reports.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Engineer(s) and Product Manager, as well as hardware, software, and validation teams to ensure proper implementation and validation of new features, components, behaviors, and controls algorithms.
  • Provide troubleshooting support for battery system issues that occur in the test lab, in the field, and on the manufacturing line.
  • Support execution of battery characterization tests, postprocessing and analysis of test data, and generation of test reports.
  • Provide integration support for battery application projects – support technical feasibility studies, create interface documents, conduct system simulations and analyses, troubleshoot integration issues

  • You will report to the CTO and collaborate with other Engineering team members located at our Technology & Innovation Center in Burlingame.

Your Experience Includes

  • 10+ years of engineering experience in the automotive or energy storage industries, prior experience working on electric vehicles is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant engineering discipline (Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, etc.). Advanced engineering degree preferred.
  • Experience with systems engineering practices and using requirements management tools
  • Experience across multiple engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, controls)
  • Experience building and mentoring multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Location: Burlingame, CA

Travel: 0 - 20%

Compensation: $248,499-$276,110
