Senior Director of Engineering, eCommerce Platform

Role And Responsibilities

The Senior Director, eCommerce role encompasses the entire eCommerce platform that powers Samsung.com, including both web and mobile platforms. The individual in this position will lead a team of talented architects and global DevOps team responsible for platform architecture, development processes, and automation to build a highly scalable and fault tolerant e-commerce platform. This role requires close collaboration with Engineering, SRE, and Product teams to understand requirements and provide technical leadership on system design, platform architecture, continuous integration/deployment, cost management, and support for multiple environments. The individual will need to make trade-offs between managed services and in-house management while driving automation for multiple production releases per day.

This highly technical role demands a broad set of skills focused on driving engineering best practices, industry-leading cloud and data architecture, and operational excellence. Responsibilities include designing highly available and scalable distributed systems, deployment technologies, infrastructure as code, robust monitoring and log management, end-to-end security, hands-on expertise with AWS, site availability, and managing data pipelines. This position requires engagement with many new and emerging technologies and applications. THE POSITION

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Design, review, and approve architectural solutions to meet complex functional and technical requirements.
  • Develop and enhance distributed systems, reusing existing capabilities to foster a clean and extensible foundation for future programs and projects.
  • Advocate for new tools, frameworks, technologies, and standards to guide the engineering and operations teams in system development.
  • Develop and enhance data pipelines and Analytics, including spearheading the exploration of adopting modern tools and technologies.
  • Possess a deep understanding of software development lifecycle processes and techniques, including development, build, test, and production deployment strategies.
  • Design, implement, and manage AWS cloud infrastructure, ensuring high availability and performance.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to the DevOps team, fostering an environment of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Elevate existing processes and create a culture that champions operational efficiency, cost optimization, and unprecedented system visibility for operations, SRE, and engineering teams.
  • Drive towards 100% compliance with infrastructure as code (IAC) strategy using tools such as Terraform and Ansible.
  • Collaborate with engineering and SRE teams to improve CI/CD pipelines and automate deployment processes.
  • Manage Kubernetes clusters using Amazon EKS.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve technical issues, drive root cause analysis (RCA), and provide technical leadership.


THE CANDIDATE

Background & Competencies Required:

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum 15 years of professional experience in architecting and shipping SaaS, PaaS, and data platforms.
  • Minimum of 12 years of experience leading teams.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience leading a global DevOps charter.
  • In-depth knowledge of modern software architectures, including techniques and concepts such as serverless, microservices, sharding, containerization, and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes), as well as other distributed systems concepts.
  • Strong hands-on expertise with data platforms, ETL processes, schema management, and analytics.
  • Extensive expertise in AWS services and technologies.
  • Proficiency in infrastructure as code tools, particularly Terraform and Ansible.
  • Proficiency in managing Elasticsearch clusters and RDS PostgreSQL databases.
  • Experience with Kubernetes and Amazon EKS.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD).
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

The salary range for this role, for candidates based in California, is expected to be between $275,000 and $325,000. Actual pay will be determined considering factors such as relevant skills and experience, and comparison to other employees in the role.
