The Assistant Controller has a solid foundation in accounting principles and is proficient in the use of financial analysis tools. Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller will assist the Finance Department with various accounting and finance activities such as: Financial reporting, budgeting, auditing, analysis, and internal controls. The Assistant Controller works closely with the Controller to analyze financial data, identify trends, provide insights to support decision making, and reconcile accounting inaccuracies or imbalances.

Responsibilities & Duties

Assist in Financial Reporting

  • Support the preparation of financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
  • Maintain accurate financial records, prepare reports, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

Budgeting and Forecasting

  • Assist in the development of annual budgets and forecasts and monitor variances between actual performance and budgeted expectations.

Financial Analysis

  • Conduct financial analysis to support decision-making, including profitability analysis, cost-benefit analysis, and variance analysis.

Account Reconciliation

  • Assist in reconciling accounts, ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial records.

Internal Controls

  • Participate in the implementation and maintenance of internal control procedures to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with regulations.

Audit Support

  • Assist in coordinating and providing support for internal and external audits, including gathering documentation and responding to auditor inquiries.

Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiencies in financial reporting and accounting processes.

Ad-hoc Projects

  • Support special projects and initiatives as assigned by senior management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • CPA or progress towards CPA certification is an asset.
  • 3-5 years of experience in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Knowledge of Canadian and US Payroll.
  • Experience with financial reporting and analysis.
  • Knowledge of Accounts Receivable/Payable.
  • Proficiency in financial software and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems (i.e. Syspro).
  • Knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Outlook, Teams and Excel).
  • Experience with financial and consolidation systems is considered an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills: Fluent French and English (oral & written) required. This position requires communication with internal parties and external auditors based across Canada and the United States.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data and draw meaningful insights.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail in financial reporting and analysis.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and contribute to the achievement of team goals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to upholding ethical standards and maintaining confidentiality of financial information.
