Transportation Manager

The Transportation Manager is responsible for the safe, compliant, efficient, and cost effective operation of the company's transportation operations. S/he carries out this responsibility by building customer relationships, operating the department at maximum production, creating a good work environment, and properly managing the assets of the company.

Requirements

You Will:

  • Provide the best possible service to our customers. Address their problems in a prompt and courteous manner. Make every customer feel important
  • Plan ahead to meet service deadlines. Ability to adjust plans to meet the customers' needs in case of an emergency
  • Responsible for daily transportation operations
  • Communicate with the customer regularly to ensure advanced knowledge of customer needs and goals, or when problems arise and deadlines will not be met
  • Provide notice of all billing changes and additional charges prior to invoicing. Follow proper authorization procedures for each customer
  • Provide updates to customer regarding progress in meeting and exceeding customer requirements.

Daily Transportation Operations:

  • Establish Key Factor management strategy with dispatch and within operations
  • Establish Key Factor score cards for operational needs to be shared weekly, monthly, and quarterly as needed with dispatcher and other operational personnel
  • Implement cost control strategies to stay within budget guidelines
  • Direct activities related to dispatching, routing and tracking of transportation for all assigned customer vehicles and drivers
  • Ensure all drivers are trained and confident with daily operational requirements, DOT requirements as well as with new technology enhancements and modifications.
  • Commit to ensuring that we minimize driver turnover through proactive engagement of driver relationships. Eliminate concerns before they arise.
  • Direct investigations to verify and resolve customer or shipper/consignee complaints and concerns
  • Ensure customer schedule of work is continually staffed to accommodate all customer needs.
  • Promote safe work environment by conducting safety audits, creating driver safety meetings and meeting with individuals to reinforce safety expectations.
  • Ensure driver logs are kept and maintained by DOT standard. Review logs weekly to ensure compliance and address driver violations or mistakes in a timely fashion. Bring any issues of non-compliance to the attention of Safety Manager for intervention.
  • Monitor spending to ensure expenses are consistent with approved budget
  • Review in coordination with any DOT agencies all accidents and compliance violations to ensure immediate corrective action.
  • Coordinate with Miller and customer accounting departments to ensure proper billing.
  • Coordinate with MTL and others, all MDS and customer specific maintenance needs to ensure maximum vehicle "up time"
  • Coordinate backhaul planning to ensure maximum utilization and maximum revenue and margin generation
  • Initiate and continue all efforts into new operational endeavors such as freight brokerage and other opportunities as they arise.

Management:

  • Lead, coach and mentor your team to ensure maximum potential and a happy, motivated environment
  • Maintain control and discipline of the employees to assure safety and productivity
  • Monitor and control overtime
  • Handle all personnel problems promptly and involve VP of Operations in problem solving
  • Serve as contact person for all assigned drivers and other personnel within your scope of operation
  • Stress the importance of safety in the work place. Report any unsafe work practices, near misses, or accidents
  • Plan, organize and manage the work of staff to ensure that the work is accomplished in a manner consistent with organizational requirements.
  • Communicate and ensure understanding of company policies and programs
  • Encourage two-way communications, employee ideas and suggestions
  • Provide ongoing feedback and coach employees to perform to their potential
  • Identify employee training needs and set developmental goals for on the job, internal or external training
  • Keep VP of Operations informed of any and all time off requests well in advance. Ensure schedule is kept and avoid any unplanned absences or tardiness issues
  • Schedule your vacation, in writing at least one month in advance. (emergencies excepted)
  • Willingness to participate in special projects that go above and beyond the normal duties such as inventories, fleet surveys, etc
  • Work with other departments and cooperate as a team player


You Have:

  • Minimum of 7 years working in the transportation industry
  • Minimum of 5 years managing a team in the transportation industry
  • Client facing experience and the ability to pivot to meet customer expectations
  • Strong technical skills and experience working with Samsara
  • Excellent communication skills in writing and orally
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record


Working Conditions:

The Transportation Manager will work in an enclosed office environment, but will also work at customer facilities encompassing a myriad of potentially different and adverse conditions. S/he may be exposed to noise, vibration, dust, exhaust fumes, and other hazardous and non-hazardous materials. S/he may need to crawl under vehicles and get in and out of vehicles, to ride with drivers and train on equipment usage.
