The Director, Development provides oversight to the unit and works directly with the Vice President, Business Development and the IDSA Foundation (IDSAF) team to sustain and grow the IDSA Foundation’s private and public grant and individual giving fundraising program. This role will foster relationships with key funding organizations and influential/philanthropic individuals, private foundations and public agencies to create enduring partnerships with IDSA. The Director will be responsible for cultivating and stewarding those relationships toward new sponsorships, grants, and individual philanthropic gifts to the Foundation.

The ideal candidate has a proven track record of creating donor strategy, soliciting, closing, stewarding large multi-year gifts from individual donors, and has cultivated relationships with public and private grant making organizations. We are seeking an experienced, entrepreneurial, and highly motivated professional with excellent communication skills.

Qualifications

Characteristic Essential Responsibilities

Programmatic Oversight:

  • Develops and executes annual fundraising plan against financial goals, to include donor acquisition, prospect research, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies to increase revenues in support of established IDSA Foundation.
  • Creates annual giving programs to support Major Gifts (Individual and Foundation Giving)
  • Mid-level: moving small gifts to larger gifts (i.e., monthly donor program)
  • Drives broad-base support: direct mail, online giving, and fundraising campaigns through social media in partnership with MarCom and Membership Engagement team.
  • Positions IDSA Foundation for private public grant invitations and develops financial ask projections and dates by prospect, leveraging and implementing external fundraising and wealth prospecting systems.
  • Augments current Salesforce fundraising system capabilities, and develops and maintains a prospect profile, strategy, and tracking/priority system.
  • Leads the grant writing process and provides direction and development of templates for all grant outreach including: grant applications, pre-award coordination, post-award budget development, and donor outreach and follow up.

Strategic Oversight

  • Formulates/maintains VIP cultivation, communications, solicitations and follow up strategies, to include the Foundation’s Board of Directors to maximize their personal and professional fundraising contributions.
  • Collaborates with senior leadership and program staff to establish annual fundraising goals in alignment with the Strategic Priorities of the member organization (IDSA).
  • Supports the COO, Vice President, Business Development and fundraising staff in any development and fundraising activities and donor follow up including in person donor or prospect meetings.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Oversees the development and dissemination of monthly giving dashboard and prospect data against budget and expenses.
  • Partners with the Marketing, Communications, and Member Engagement team to develop targeted campaigns and pull through aligning stakeholder outreach and messaging to the mission and vision of IDSA.
  • Collaborates with Program Development team to share donor feedback and areas of funding interest.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Identifies grant opportunities and collaborates with other members of IDSA and IDSA Foundation to help draft grant application(s).
  • Fosters successful major gift fundraising by preparing IDSA and IDSA Foundation board members to participate routinely and effectively in development activities and prospect appointments
  • Anticipates future trends in fundraising/grants and their implications
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, liberal arts, or related field; relevant experience can be submitted.
  • Advanced degree a plus.
  • At least ten years of fundraising experience with increasing responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated staff management experience, including the ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage the performance of a fundraising team.
  • At least seven years of experience in the non-profit development field

Competencies: Knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Expertise in current and evolving trends in major gifts giving and solicitation and annual fund development campaigns
  • Extensive knowledge in core principles of grant writing, grant management, and partnership development
  • Proven track record in asking and closing major gifts
  • Ability to build and maintain long-term stakeholder relationships
  • Knowledge of advanced gift planning concepts and business planning
  • Ability to adapt leadership style and utilizes a diverse approach to cultivate an inclusive learning environment
  • Ability to lead change and model the way (within and across departments)
  • Intellectual curiosity and a strong willingness to learn new skills
  • Highly organized, reliable, and detail oriented with a focus on achieving goals and strategic priorities in a timely manner.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment; a driving force who manages toward clarity, finds solutions, and can think strategically about the mission of the Foundation
  • Excellent verbal, written, presentation and interpersonal skills and ability to effectively interact with a variety of high-profile internal and external stakeholders
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office suite, SalesForce is a plus.

Additional Qualifications: (Such as certifications, industry-specific experience and the experience working with certain equipment)

  • CFRE a plus
  • Portfolio of existing relationship and awards from national health foundations (RWJ, Welcome Trust, Stephen Lewis Fdn) and related donors strongly preferred
  • Experience working in donor management software (Salesforce Classy, Raiser’s Edge, Bloomerang, iWave, Instrumental, etc.) strongly preferred
  • Recent and relevant experience working in the non-profit or association space; healthcare strongly preferred

Physical Demands

  • This position requires sitting and/or standing at a desk, prolonged sitting and bending and lifting during travel, as well as extensive sitting, standing, walking, and lifting during IDWeek.
  • This role also requires access to stable internet, and ability to spend several hours on the computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. Standing for extended periods of time may be necessary (tradeshows, conferences, marketing events, etc.)
