The Animal Legal Defense Fund’s mission is to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system. The Animal Legal Defense Fund accomplishes this mission by filing high-impact lawsuits to protect animals from harm, providing free legal assistance and training to prosecutors to assure that animal abusers are held accountable for their crimes, supporting tough animal protection legislation and fighting legislation harmful to animals, and providing resources and opportunities to law students and professionals to advance the emerging field of animal law.

Role Description

Working closely with ALDF’s Communications Director, the Digital Media Manager is responsible for overseeing the execution of the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s digital campaigns across our digital platforms, including the ALDF websites, digital advocacy platforms, online supporter databases and social media, search engine optimization (SEO), and email marketing. As the manager of the Digital team, the Digital Media Manager directs online communications to drive advocacy, keep supporters up-to-date, and to introduce ALDF's work to new audiences.

How You Will Make a Difference

The Digital Media Manager is primarily responsible for overseeing, managing and evaluating ALDF’s digital platforms to advance the goals and interests of the organization.

Management

  • Develop and execute a digital media plan to meet and exceed departmental goals, including user experience, supporter engagement and retention, and updating digital offerings to keep up with developing technologies and ultimately drive impact and engagement for ALDF’s mission.
  • Manage Digital Media Specialist in the Communications department.
  • Manage vendors, contractors, and consultants for website hosting, programming, maintenance, and design.
  • Manage other outside contractors pertaining to online communications as needed.
  • Manage online communications (emails, action centers, web updates, and online forms) to ensure that all online communications are on brand as far as messaging and tone and using best practices for their respective formats.

Web

  • Maintains the usability and efficiency of ALDF’s website and incorporates SEO techniques and other best practices to drive increased traffic to the site
  • Create and maintain analytics and testing strategy to evaluate effectiveness of various ALDF sites using site metrics, heat maps, A/B testing, and other evaluative strategies.
  • Develop and execute digital strategies that target core audiences based on supporter demographics, device usage, mobile/desktop balance utilizing ongoing data analysis and reporting.
  • Maintain and optimize ALDF’s online store including inventory management and listing optimization.
  • Coordinate content posting with Social Media staff.
  • Post diverse legal and advocacy driven content on multiple websites, utilizing multiple templates and complex taxonomy.
  • Update case and legislative webpages status on a rolling basis, with information supplied by programs departments.
  • Perform daily maintenance, monitoring, and quality assurance of the site.
  • Serve as a final check before publishing and coordinate edits as needed.
  • Maintain and organize image and video assets in our digital media library.

Digital Advocacy

  • Maintain and administer the use of multiple online advocacy platforms, including EveryAction and Engaging Networks, used for donor management, fundraising, advocacy, and digital outreach.
  • Stays informed on trends and advises staff on web and email blasts, making recommendations and developing testing strategies on branding, versioning, and formatting.
  • Advises staff and outside vendors as needed to ensure quality work product is maintained to ALDF's standards organization wide.
  • As assigned, assist with the creation and publication of other on and offline communications content, including written content, social media, etc.
  • Oversee the administration of ALDF's websites by partnering with the content team to produce updates and ensure a user-friendly experience.
  • Manage the creation of action centers that are used by thousands of our supporters on a daily basis.
  • Manage mass emails to assure that they are on brand, on message, and using best practices for their respective formats.
  • Create and evaluate strategies to optimize and improve advocacy efforts through copy suggestions, image curation and variant testing.
  • Oversee and execute online communications (including mass emails, multiple online action center platforms, and online forms) to ensure that all online communications are optimized for conversions, on brand, user friendly, and using best practices for their respective formats.
  • Build and send mass emails, including shepherding emails through a review process for quality assurance.
  • Execute campaigns via online platforms that enable mass email, SMS communication, click to call, and social sharing.
  • Provide insight and advice, with a focus on maximizing posts for use on the web and upholding content quality standards, emphasizing usability, shareability, findability, style, and maintainability.
  • Serve as a final check before publishing and coordinate edits as needed.
  • Stay informed on trends and advise staff making recommendations on branding, versioning, and format.

Data Management

  • Maintain multiple CRM databases containing more than 300,000 records.
  • Oversee and execute the regular synchronization of supporter data between databases.
  • Create and maintain data hygiene standards and perform regular database maintenance.
  • Import new supporter data from social media outreach, organization events and other sources.
  • Reconcile data from multiple sources and develop strategies for sustainable ongoing data maintenance.
  • Regularly review supporter data records to ensure data integrity and value to the organization.
  • Work with the Operations and Development to coordinate the CRM data strategy for the organization.
  • Create and execute migration strategies for CRM databases.
  • Research and vet platforms and products for technical compliance with existing databases.
  • Collaborate with IT and Operations to create and maintain data solutions for the Communications department including, but not limited to, a Content Management System.

Analytics and Reporting

  • Oversee and direct the work of the Digital Media Specialist based on metrics and data analysis related to performance of emails blasts, digital advocacy and website performance.
  • Manage and maintain reporting systems to track the results of online communications efforts for the department using Google Analytics, Google Dashboard and other online tools.
  • Provide regular reports on digital outreach performance to both the Communications department and other Programs within the organization.
  • Assess efficacy and plan strategy for lead generation and supporter list growth through analysis of multiple data sources.
  • Create and maintain reporting tools for Digital Advocacy and email blast performance.

Intranet

  • Create posts, including uploading and embedding videos, news articles, staff announcements, graphics, and other apps as needed.
  • Assist Human Resources with maintaining staff directory, onboarding assets, internal newsletter distribution, and associated tasks, as needed.
  • Coordinate with Operations to ensure department and organizational calendars are updated.

General Responsibilities

  • Manage website images, taking photos, using stock photos, and manipulating photos in Photoshop as needed to maintain a consistently professional quality of online images.
  • Manage creation of original graphics for distribution through online channels. Create graphics as needed.
  • Maintain registration and inventory of domain name registration.
  • Coordinate with Development team on email blasts, site pages, and other fundraising activities.
  • Advise staff and outside vendors as needed to ensure quality work product is maintained to ALDF's standards organization wide.
  • Research, evaluate and implement new online tools for online advocacy and fundraising.
  • Manage SMS and Peer to Peer advocacy.
  • Advise staff on content in collaboration with the Communications Director, with a focus on maximizing posts for use on the web and upholding content quality standards, emphasizing usability, shareability, findability, style, and maintainability. Serve as a final check before publishing and coordinate edits as needed with communications director.
  • Research and propose new features and technologies that will enhance usability and functionality of the website.
  • Stay up to date on industry trends and technological developments related to our website and other emerging platforms.
  • Assist Human Resources and Operations with maintaining internal communications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 - 5 years experience in Digital Media.
  • Minimum of 1 - 2 years supervisory experience, preferably digital media professionals.

  • Experience with Project Management software is highly recommended.
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop required.
  • Excel data management and manipulation skills required.
  • Experience with Microsoft 365 including Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint.
  • Experience with service integration tools such as Integromat and Zapier recommended.

We Offer Competitive Compensation With Excellent Benefits, Including

Starting annual salary of $92,106 for most geographic locations.

For candidates located within 25 miles of Washington D.C., Cotati, CA, and Los Angeles, starting pay is $96,954.

For candidates located within 25 miles of New York City and San Francisco, starting pay is $101,802.

To ensure salary equity, we do not negotiate salary outside of the published starting rate. Rate is determined by role, using set geographical factors.

This is a U.S. based position.
