THE POSITION AND THE OPPORTUNITY

Building on the organization’s legacy of collaboration, excellence and inclusion, TNDC is seeking a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead this iconic, highly respected San Francisco organization through this chapter of post-pandemic uncertainty to stabilization followed by strategic growth.

The new CEO is responsible for the vision and leadership of TNDC, as well as its financial health, stability, and sustainability. The CEO leads and manages TNDC’s staff of over 450, including the Senior Management Team, which is comprised of the Executive Management Team as well as Program and Functional Senior Directors.

In order to address the needs of the organization as it rebounds from the complications caused by the pandemic, the Board and Executive Leadership team have created an 18-month Strategic Roadmap. The CEO will provide leadership and counsel in their role of guiding the organization through the implementation of the Plan. This plan is designed to quickly address the financial, cultural, and operational adjustments needed so the organization can continue to serve its community.

Specific areas of responsibility include resource development, community relations, government relations (including City, state and federal) strategic planning and program development, staff management and development, financial management and legal compliance. The CEO oversees and participates in fundraising, donor relations, and community outreach, as well as facilitating the work of the Board of Directors.

Reporting to the Board of Directors and directly managed by the President of the Board, the CEO works in partnership with the Board on strategic issues, policy issues, fund development, and high-level operational issues.

Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership & Strategy

  • Provide executive leadership, in collaboration with the Board, in strategic and organizational planning, with vision and innovation to strengthen TNDC’s core competencies. This includes finance and organizational issues.
  • Work with Board and Executive Leadership Team to implement the 18-month Strategic Roadmap achieving immediate goals and creating long-term financial stability.
  • Provide executive leadership and management of TNDC, ensuring high level strategic thinking is engendered with Board and staff; operational management is executed appropriately by staff; and governance is executed appropriately by the Board.
  • Demonstrate complex decision making to preserve the organization’s mission.
  • Strategically lead the Board and staff in establishing goals and developing policies, procedures, budgets and programs that fulfill the mission.
  • Support and partner with the Board for ongoing board recruitment and development of Board members.
  • Model collaborative leadership internally with Board, staff, and residents, as well as external partners and stakeholders.

Financial Management

  • Work with the CFO, COO, Chief Portfolio Officer and Board of Directors to enhance the financial security of the organization.
  • Work with the CFO to develop the annual operating budget in conjunction with executive leadership.
  • Bring expertise in the affordable housing development field and work to risk assessment, decision making, and business planning.
  • Develop, in conjunction with the CFO, financial models to assess performance.

Organizational Culture

  • Ensure TNDC is an organization with high morale, a collaborative approach resulting in collaborative actions, and shared purpose; one that promotes departmental cross collaboration leading to greater efficiency, information sharing, and increasing organizational accountability.
  • Recruit, develop (via coaching, mentoring, guidance, feedback), and retain the best people at every level of the organization. Understand the nuances and complexities of leading and motivating a diverse staff with different personalities, work styles, and cultural experiences.
  • Nurtures high levels of Board and staff engagement; leads a culture of empowerment, outcomes, data, and accountability.

Affordable Housing Development/Portfolio Management

  • Provide affordable housing development executive leadership, oversight, and guidance to the real estate development team
  • Support the CFO, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Portfolio Officer in financial structuring of projects, re-financing, and tax credits, as needed.
  • Ensure strategic oversight of the development pipeline.
  • Work with the Chief Portfolio Officer, CFO, and Chief Operating Officer to ensure property management operations are meeting or exceeding financial sustainability goals and objectives.
  • Hold Executive Management Team and Senior Management Team accountable for the financial performance of their respective staffs’ decisions and actions.

Fundraising / Resource Development

  • Strengthen TNDC’s fundraising capability, working in partnership with Chief Fund Development Officer, by diversifying and growing its revenue channels.
  • Build on TNDC’s growth in individual giving, legacy giving, and sponsorships.
  • Work in partnership with TNDC’s CFO, CFD&SO, and fund development team to design and achieve a long-term sustainable revenue model.
  • Cultivate relationships and secure financial support from government agencies, foundations, businesses, and individual donors.
  • Engage leadership to continue to build a culture of philanthropy at TNDC that supports the priorities of the underserved communities where TNDC works.

External Relations and Advocacy

  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for TNDC, representing TNDC and its work to various government, philanthropic, policy, stakeholder groups, and broadly to the community.
  • Build and manage positive relationships with elected officials, local and state agencies, business and community partners, community and nonprofit leaders.
  • Build strategic alliances, coalitions and partnerships with like-minded organizations and a broad array of stakeholders to overcome challenges and advance shared policy and advocacy goals.
  • Build on and further TNDC’s brand and reputation, locally and statewide.
  • Identify strategic opportunities to advance TNDC’s mission and agenda.

Qualifications

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent demonstrated professional experience is highly desired. M aster’s degree in public administration, City and Regional Planning, Business Administration or a related field is preferred but not required.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Mi nimum of five to seven years of experience as Executive Director, CEO, or as a senior leader of a nonprofit organization with responsibility for financial health and sustainability, P&L management, and budget authority experience.
  • Significant leadership experience in non-profit or for-profit affordable housing, public agency, community and/or real-estate development and affordable housing service and programs in Northern California. Experience as an owner of affordable housing that provides property management services is highly desired.
  • Experience working with, in partnership, and providing executive officer leadership to a board of directors, including leading strategic planning and implementation.
  • Experience guiding an organization through a time of cultural transformation, organizational development and change management. Drives change toward the best interest of the organization and in the direction of strategic goals and objectives and aligned with organizational mission, vision and values.
  • Experience in partnering with an organization’s chief fund development officer in setting fund development strategy and executing fundraising goals. Takes a relationship-based approach to securing grant funding and other philanthropic support. Experience working with a diverse donor base and an appreciation for the time required for fundraising is essential.
  • Strong communication skills, professional representation, stakeholder relationship management, negotiation, persuasiveness, listening, and diplomacy skills.
  • Understanding of major metropolitan area government and political dynamics including p rior experience with San Francisco’s (or similar major metro-area) government processes and politics is valued. An ability to navigate successfully in complex political landscapes with cities, counties and funding agencies as they relate to the mission of TNDC .

Compensation

An annual salary ranging from $330,000 – $350,000 will be offered, commensurate with experience, plus a comprehensive benefits package.
