Objective: 

  • The SVP Finance & Controller leads the finance team and manages the infrastructure necessary to support the accounting needs of the consolidated company, our Nebraska-domiciled carrier, our Vermont captive insurer, and coordinates with providers in local jurisdictions to produce financial statements for our subsidiaries outside the U.S.


What you will do:

  • Financial Reporting: Lead the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and filings in accordance with U.S. GAAP and Statutory accounting principles, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Close Process: Coordinate the monthly close of the consolidated general ledger, including those of operating subsidiaries, to ensure a seamless and efficient process.
  • Reinsurance & Investments: Oversee accurate accounting for both inward and outward reinsurance transactions and the organization’s investment portfolio.
  • Performance Insights: Provide valuable insights on business performance and expense management to profit center leaders and functional leaders across the company.
  • Team Development: Cultivate a skilled and knowledgeable team capable of supporting and scaling the organization as it grows.
  • Internal Controls: Establish and refine key internal controls to guide the company towards the next phase of the organization as we scale up operations.
  • Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with business partners and cross-functional teams across all levels of the organization.
  • External Stakeholder Engagement: Develop and sustain effective relationships with key external stakeholders, including auditors, regulators, and rating agencies.


What Cowbell needs from you:

  • Experience: A minimum of ten years of in-depth technical experience in Statutory, GAAP, and reinsurance within the P&C insurance industry is required.
  • Education: A CPA degree is mandatory.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in NetSuite general ledger is strongly preferred.
  • Systems thinking: ability to see the bigger picture and understanding complex interdependencies, and making decisions that consider the broader impact.
  • Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated capability to navigate and extract critical information from various finance applications/platforms, including statutory accounting, expense management, investment accounting, FP&A, and banking 
  • Interpersonal & Communication Skills: Excellent ability to interact effectively with management at various levels.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to lead and manage dispersed teams remotely, including team members based in India.
  • Adaptability: Skilled in managing multiple tasks and thriving in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Audit Management: Extensive experience in managing annual audits with top-tier audit firms, statutory audits, and 401(k) audits.
  • Board Communication: Ability to communicate quarterly results to the Company Board’s audit committee with clarity and precision.
