Job Description Summary

The Vice President, Engineering’s main responsibility is providing strategic corporate leadership for the overall successful operation of the Engineering discipline across all Sonesta managed hotels (approximately two hundred hotels). Including both Full-Service Hotels and Focused Service Hotels (Extended Stay and Select brands). As the strategic leader for Engineering, this individual is responsible for championing all aspects of Engineering including daily operations, capital plans and projects, staffing, training, reporting, systems, vendor management, standard operating procedures/processes, and ensuring all hotels are maintained in proper working order. The individual serves as a key resource to the organization as an expert in Hotel Engineering operations and oversees a Corporate/Regional team responsible for supporting the hotels. Working closely with Regional and Hotel teams, this position will lead, partner and follow-up on projects and initiatives that will drive results to successfully achieve employee satisfaction, guest satisfaction, financial performance, brand promise, and owner/asset management goals.

Job Description

Principle duties and responsibilities (Essential Functions) include:

  • Develop a strategic vision and plan for Engineering across the organization.
  • Plan, implement, and direct best business/engineering practices to manage people, resources, processes, mechanical/safety systems and equipment, infrastructure, and facilities.
  • Lead the annual capital planning process across hotels, tracking progress, and ensuring all projects are completed.
  • Oversee the evaluation and selection of major engineering contracts that support Engineering strategic planning and preventive maintenance requirements.
  • Work closely with Regional Directors of Engineering, General Managers, Directors of Engineering, Maintenance Managers, Finance, Procurement, and other stakeholders to implement and monitor processes for management of service contracts, vendor selections and procurement policies and procedures.
  • Manage relationships with service vendors and third-party contractors.
  • Negotiate national service agreements.
  • Ensure preventative maintenance programs are in place across all hotels.
  • Identify process improvements and opportunities for cost savings across projects and hotels.
  • Establish, communicate, and implement annual goals, KPIs, and actions plans for Engineering and individual hotels.
  • Lead the Corporate Engineering team including both Corporate-based and Regional-based team members.
  • Respond and address emergency situations impacting the facilities, equipment, and infrastructure at the hotels.
  • Drive employee engagement on both the Corporate and hotel level.
  • Oversee the weekly and monthly Engineering reporting and metrics while working with leadership to hold hotel accountable for performance and results.
  • Manage the Corporate Engineering annual budget.
  • Establish, implement, and enforce Engineering SOPs.
  • Inspect hotels as part of hotel audit process and ensure Regional Engineering team is visiting hotels.
  • Recommend appropriate staffing models and ensure hotels are properly staffed.
  • Implement energy savings programs and initiatives.
  • Review contracts and ensure terms and conditions meet Sonesta’s requirements.
  • Interact with all levels of the organization – including General Managers; Hotel teams, Corporate Senior Leadership; Ownership; Regional teams, and corporate support departments.
  • Support all other corporate office departments and disciplines as needed (e.g., Finance, Risk Management, Legal, Hotel Operations, Procurement, Training, etc.).
  • Work closely with Risk Management and Legal on insurance claims and hotel property damage.
  • Partner with asset managers.
  • Lead and champion cross functional work teams to identify, develop, improve, and implement standards, policies, and procedures to support Sonesta’s overall objectives.
  • Partner with the training discipline to identify training needs to support best-in-class and consistent guest experience delivery.
  • Promote the sharing of best practices across hotels.
  • Ensure adherence to all regulatory and safety requirements.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Qualifications And Skills

A candidate for this position must possess the following applicable knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to demonstrate and provide applicable examples to support their competencies therein.

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of 10 years engineering management experience in hotels or similar required, including at least five years at the Director of Engineering level.
  • Multi-unit hotel Engineering experience with 5+ years’ experience as a Corporate/Regional Engineer.
  • Prior Corporate experience is a plus.
  • Experience with different size/types of hotels (e.g., Full-Service, Extended Stay).
  • Significant knowledge of all hotel systems/equipment and the function and management of the hotel Engineering function.
  • Ability to negotiate with vendors and understand contractual obligations and language.
  • Strong P&L experience and proficient at statistical and metrics analysis.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communicator and the ability to deliver presentations in a concise, well-organized manner.
  • Strategic thinker.
  • Ability to work and build relationships with individuals within different levels of the organization from the senior executive leadership to the front-line employees.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, and Powerpoint.


Additional Job Information/Anticipated

Pay Range

$250,000 to $275,000. Base pay offer may vary depending on various factors, including but not limited to job related knowledge, skills and job specific/overall experience
