Who we are: The Police Athletic League (PAL) of New York City is an independent youth development nonprofit organization and has been a vibrant and vital institution, serving as an effective, critical bridge between police and communities across all five boroughs of the City since 1914. PAL operates diverse programs for children as young as 2 years old to young adults. Programs include Head Start, after-school programs, and summer day camps for elementary, middle, and high school youth, and summer Playstreets. PAL also runs evening teen centers and college readiness programs, youth employment, and juvenile justice programs. Staying true to PAL’s roots, a cornerstone of our youth development strategy includes offering competitive and recreational sports for children of all ages. Position Summary

The communications manager will report to the Chief of Staff and will have a critical role in shaping and disseminating PAL's communication strategy with the end goal of elevating PAL’s mission, diverse programming, and visibility. The communications manager will craft compelling messaging, coordinate media outreach, produce engaging content, and leverage digital and traditional communication channels to reach diverse audiences and motivate stakeholder engagement. Additionally, the communications manager will manage the partnership between PAL and its external public relations firm.

What You’ll Do

  • Work with senior leadership to develop a comprehensive Commnications strategy that effectively conveys the impact of PAL's programs and initiatives.
  • Conduct thorough research to gather content from internal staff, including updates, achievements, initiatives, and success stories to be included in communication materials.
  • Craft compelling and engaging content and disseminate via multimedia channels, including social media, videos, podcasts, and blogs, to amplify our message and engage current audience and attract new diverse audiences
  • Maintain PAL’s external website content, ensuring that information on PAL contacts, services, and events are up to date
  • Develop timelines for communications campaigns and backwards plan to ensure successful execution
  • Lead the creation of visually appealing and impactful content.
  • Spearhead the process of preparing pledge agreement letters to all donors and sending gifts
  • of appreciation to donors in the $1000+ level.
  • Schedule, manage, and prepare semi-annual written and audio reports to donors highlighting program achievements (includes managing the annual reporting schedule)
  • Schedule and prepare monthly email blasts through Constant Contact
  • Identify and cultivate potential media partners and opportunities for strategic collaborations to enhance brand visibility and reach.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for media inquiries, interview requests, and partnership inquiries.
  • Develop and distribute press releases, media pitches, and media kits to relevant media outlets to generate positive media coverage.
  • Analyze content engagement data to identify patterns, trends, and areas for improvement in communication strategies.

Qualifications

Who you are/What you bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing or related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in storytelling, preferably in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization with a strong understanding of multimedia communications and proficiency in creating content.
  • Understanding of messaging and storytelling across a diverse range of audiences.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to craft compelling narratives and content.
  • Ability to utilize a keen eye for design and aesthetics to create and/or collaborate on visually appealing content.
  • Strong sense of prioritization and effective in managing multiple projects within a dynamic and fast-paced setting.
  • Experience in managing websites, social media platforms, and various digital resources, with expertise in crafting marketing materials, newsletters, press releases, and printed publications.
  • Possesses excellent interpersonal abilities and adept communication and presentation skills, demonstrated through compelling written and verbal communication, enabling effective information delivery, persuasion, and influence.
  • Experience using metrics to track progress towards goals and familiarity with communications tools such as WordPress and MailChimp.
  • Willingness to travel and work flexible hours as needed.

Compensation: The range for this role is $75K to $85K; where the finalist falls in this range will be commensurate with skills and experience
