    The Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin seeks a Managing Director to oversee all administrative aspects of a new interdisciplinary institute-level initiative. The Institute will serve as a national nexus point for collaborative efforts to grow scientific Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructure and knowledge and span multiple institutions of higher education, federal agencies, industry, and nonprofits/foundations. The Institute will accelerate AI innovations through domain-specific research while growing and nurturing the next generation of talent. The Managing Director will report to the Institute directors while working alongside faculty, administrative staff, steering committees, and other research and community stakeholders.

    Purpose

    The Managing Director will play a key role in launching the Institute and in the organization and oversight of the research and education activities. This includes helping to implement a range of strategic and capacity building activities designed to promote AI research that includes enhancement of collaboration and team science, communication of research opportunities, milestone setting and evaluation, reporting, budget and finance management, and nurturing alliances between and among faculty and industry partners. The individual in this position will be expected to partner with the Institute directors to support program goals and outcomes.

    Responsibilities

    • Partner with the directors, faculty, and other stakeholders in strategic planning, execution, and evaluation of Institute research objectives.
    • Develop and manage the institute budgets. Oversee regular reporting to funding agencies.
    • Coordinate resources across the various departments to promote collaboration.
    • Serve as an institutional representative to the university community and external visitors and provide information and analysis to support formal partnerships with external entities.
    • Serve as a liaison with sponsors, department offices and partnering institutions. Disseminate research opportunities and facilitate collaborations.
    • Oversee the review of internal funding programs to catalyze research.
    • Work with educational program managers to support educational initiatives including workshops, trainings, and development of new curriculum with domain experts.
    • Organize internal research community building events (e.g., symposia, seminar series).
    • Identify opportunities for collaboration with other academic centers and industry. Provide project management support for building formal partnerships.
    • Support the University’s government relations and communications teams in conveying the vision, accomplishments and needs of the Institute and its initiatives.
    • Participate in broader institutional initiatives, proposal and award applications, staff mentoring, and other administrative assignments.
    • Hire, train and mentor staff as needed.

    Required Qualifications

    Master’s Degree + two years of related experience or Bachelor’s degree + six years of related experience.

    Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • MS or PhD degree (computational field, astronomy, or physics preferred)
    • Two or more years of highly relevant program development experience
    • University experience
    • Strong organizational skills
    • Significant experience in communication
    • Experience with complex program development, management, and accounting
    • Demonstrated ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team
    • Willingness and ability to work flexibly and on short notice in order to meet tight deadlines
    • Experience with coding and/or website maintenance


    Salary Range

    $100,000 - $110,000 + depending on qualifications

    Employment Eligibility:

    Retirement Plan Eligibility:

    The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
