Job Overview

MassCEC seeks a talented and experienced leader to serve as the organization’s Managing Director of the Accelerating Decarbonization team. The Managing Director will oversee all aspects of MassCEC’s Accelerating Decarbonization programs, which are run by three teams: high performance buildings, clean transportation, and achieving a net zero grid. These teams work on innovative approaches to addressing decarbonization barriers that can then be used as learnings for bringing climatetech solutions to scale. The Managing Director will be a member of the Leadership Team and report directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

The Accelerating Decarbonization programs identify market needs, gaps, and barriers, conduct research, provide thought leadership, and deploy programs or services to successfully and quantifiably facilitate early market development with the goal of achieving market adoption. The Managing Director will be responsible for overseeing the evaluation of program effectiveness in driving carbon emissions reduction and early market adoption, advising on program and operational efficiencies, and overseeing program area strategic planning and budgets. This individual will directly manage four senior director level direct reports who have a combined total of 30+ staff members reporting to them. The Managing Director will be accountable for optimizing team performance through skilled leadership, communication, and problem solving. They must also have strong interpersonal and management skills to provide mentoring, guidance, and professional development across the entire team in alignment with the organization's mission.

The Managing Director will ensure the Accelerating Decarbonization team’s work is in alignment with the goals of MassCEC and the Healey-Driscoll Administration. Key to the success of the role will be building collaborative relationships with staff of relevant state agencies affiliated with MassCEC’s work including, but not limited to, the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA), Department of Energy Resources (DOER), Department of Public Utilities (DPU), Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Office of Climate Innovation & Resilience (OCIR). This position will involve communicating the value and impact of MassCEC’s Accelerating Decarbonization programs to MassCEC’s Board of Directors and the Massachusetts Legislature. Other stakeholder engagement may include clean energy and climatetech businesses, non-profits, educational institutions, trade organizations, community-based organizations, municipalities, and other entities that partner with MassCEC’s program efforts.

Finally, the successful candidate will have experience in clean energy and/or climatetech policy, programs, technologies, and/or business models, ideally including familiarity with the decarbonization of buildings, transportation, and the electric grid.

Roles And Responsibilities

The selected candidate will have specific duties to, at a minimum:

• Provide overall strategic direction and leadership for all MassCEC’s Accelerating Decarbonization programs including:
• Identifying and designing programs to address critical technology, industry, or consumer barriers to drive market adoption of clean energy and climatetech solutions;
• ensuring alignment with the state’s climate goals and with other public and private sector efforts, understanding industry and stakeholder needs; and
• establishing inspirational and achievable benchmarks, interpreting data and metrics from relevant programs, and recommending changes to program design, as necessary.

• Provide direct supervision and management of the Accelerating Decarbonization team, making professional development and staff satisfaction a priority.
• Provide regular updates to the CEO/Chief Operating Officer/Chief of Staff on program activities and progress toward program goals.
• Participate in the organization’s budget development process; ensure administrative project and contract integrity, and track results.
• Present to the MassCEC Board of Directors on program strategy, authorizations, and updates, as needed.
• Serve as a strategic partner to CEO and Leadership Team to ensure priorities are established with a lens toward effective resource management, programmatic and operational efficiencies, and strategic alignment across teams.
• Foster strong relationships with regional, national and international partners, including industry groups, economic development bodies, workforce development bodies, governmental organizations and research institutions.
• Continually communicate with businesses, industry contacts, state and federal agencies as necessary to stay up to date with industry needs and feedback.
• Represent MassCEC on related external councils and working groups as needed.
• Represent MassCEC at conferences and on panels where building, transportation, and grid decarbonization activities are being discussed, as needed.
• Other tasks identified by the CEO as needed.
  
  

Position Qualifications

Education:

• Bachelor's degree in public policy, energy, environment studies, engineering, architecture, economics, business management, or related field, or equivalent.
• Advanced degree in business, public policy, law, economics, or similar field or equivalent is preferred.
  
  

Experience

• 10+ years of progressive management and leadership experience in clean energy or climatetech.
• Experience in program development and administration, finding operational and programmatic efficiencies to improve work product and staffing bandwidth.
• Experience building, managing, and mentoring diverse teams and/or business units to address complex problems, while maintaining focus on common goals.
• Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships both internally and externally with a diverse set of organizations (public, private, research, etc.).
