POSITION TITLE: Director of Food Services

REPORTS TO: Chief Executive officer (CEO)

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

COMPENSATION: $90,000-$110,000

LOCATION: San Diego, CA

Position Summary:

The Director of Food Services oversees the food service production and delivery system, including purchase and inventory of food and supplies for two probation department facilities for juveniles. The Food Service Director will ensure conformance with food quality, nutrition, and productivity standards.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Supervises food service operations for assigned county contract (e.g., staffing, menu planning, purchasing, food production, record keeping, State and Federal reporting)
  • Publishes menus, makes available various food choices that appeal to consumer preferences, and manages food preparation activities according to contract requirements and guidelines.
  • Maintains the highest standards of cleanliness and safety in the kitchen.
  • Serves as an active member of the management team & upholds board policies, implements administrative guidelines/procedures.
  • Advances the organization’s professional image, maintains open/effective communications and problem-solving techniques to tactfully address and resolve questions/concerns.
  • Encourages innovation, analyzes data to improve operations, serves as an information resource, and helps develop and implement the organization's strategic plan.
  • Administers the board-approved budget for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Approves the purchase of supplies and equipment and ensures that program resources are equitably apportioned.
  • Plans, procures, and manages supplemental service contracts related to assigned programs and manages cost control programs.
  • Prepares bid specifications, obtains price quotes and prepares comparative data (e.g., quality, warranties, discounts, delivery dates, etc.).
  • Approves invoices for payment and prepares revenue/expense projections and maintains accurate inventory records.
  • Participates in food service staff selection and orientation processes, ensures the equitable distribution of workloads, arranges for substitutes during staff absences as needed and assist in the hiring, transfer, promotion, demotion, or dismissal of food service workers.
  • Ensures compliance with mandated regulations (e.g., hazard analysis of critical control points, portion size, sanitation procedures, etc.).
  • Collaborates with the Director of Programs to provide apprentices with transitional employment opportunities.


Management and Leadership

  • Hire, train, mentor, manage, and retain a high-performing team. 
  • Manage direct report performance according to KFG’s evaluations and performance improvement processes.
  • Establish clear expectations and develop a robust work plan that is driven to meet the department indicators while fostering a culture of accountability. 
  • Serve as a member of the Executive Team. 
  • Manage and attend assigned committees and board meetings in an advisory capacity. 
  • Monitor and report on department activities and outcomes.

Education & Work Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field (preferred)
  • Three years of food service operation experience
  • Prior experience in a school setting (preferred)
  • High volume production and catering experience (preferred)
  • Understanding of state regulations and local policies regarding school food services.
  • Knowledge and experience with forecasting, budgeting, labor management, and purchasing to ensure maximum productivity.
  • Proficient in Microsoft office 365 programs (Excel, Word, Power Point, One Drive, and Share Point).


Work Environment:

This job operates in a kitchen environment, housed with equipment such as an oven, stove, dishwasher, slicer, coffee machine, steamer, mixer and chef’s knives. The employee is frequently exposed to heat, steam, fire and noise.

This job operates across multiple locations including the following juvenile detention centers: Youth Transition Campus 2801 Meadowlark Drive San Diego Ca 92123 and East Mesa Juvenile Detention facility 446 Alta Road # 6100 San Diego, CA 92158.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described are representative of those that an employee must meet to perform the essential functions of this job successfully.  

The employee is required to stand for prolonged periods of time and reach, lift, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, push, and pull items weighing 50 pounds or less. The position requires manual dexterity, auditory and visual skills, and the ability to follow written and oral instructions and procedures.  

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:  

This is a full-time exempt position, and regular hours of work and days are Monday through Friday. However, this position can regularly require evening hours and frequent weekend work.

Travel:   

The employee will be expected to travel as needed to additional KFG locations and the juvenile detention centers listed below. The employee must have a driver's license, access to reliable transportation to KFG locations as needed, and the ability to work across multiple sites.
