Director of Communications

Position Summary
The Director of Communications is responsible for modeling the Compassus values of Compassion, Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Innovation and for promoting the Compassus philosophy, using the 6 Pillars of success as the foundation. S/he is responsible for upholding the Code of Ethical Conduct and for promoting positive working relationships within the company, among all departments, and all external stakeholders. The Director of Communications plays a key role in elevating company culture by engaging, aligning, and inspiring colleagues with the company mission, vision, and business strategies. S/he builds and optimizes the current internal communications framework, drives message consistency and discipline, and aligns all content from the executive suite to frontline team members. S/he is also responsible for developing cohesive communication plans to support and align with organizational strategy, including identifying stakeholders, drafting communication, and managing deadlines.
Position Specific Responsibilities
- Creates and drives an efficient, focused, and message-driven internal communications program that aligns with Compassus’ culture and brand and with external communications messages.
- Leads the implementation of the company's external position and manages thought leadership opportunities for leaders through a variety of vehicles including but not limited to speaking engagements, articles, interviews, podcasts, and social media.
- Manages media relations for the corporate office and supports local field media relations.
- Develops and ensures quality control of content across all platforms (eNewsletters, press releases, speeches, social, etc.).
- Collaborates with leadership and team members to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions. Develops effective strategies to address these opportunities and execute them efficiently.
- Possesses an in-depth understanding of the primary audiences Compassus seeks to influence, helps develop the key messages to influence these audiences, and recognizes which communications channels are most effective in delivering messages.
- Creates compelling messages that provide team members at all levels with a clear line of sight to business strategy.
- Ensures organizational initiatives and projects are successfully communicated to team members and stakeholders and drives understanding of priorities and key initiatives.
- Ensures consistency and alignment of internal communication messages and activities across all functions and departments.
- Manages the company’s internal communications channels and creates content that supports the company’s strategic objectives.
- Develops cohesive communications plans to include internal and external stakeholders.
- Supports crisis management and communications activities.
- Manages communication vendor relationships.
- Establishes and tracks metrics that help correlate internal communications programs to team member productivity and organizational performance.
- Supports the company engagement program(s), including identifying and implementing communications opportunities to connect leadership with team members and developing key messages and communications materials.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or Public Relations required.
- At least five (5) years of experience in internal and external communications required.
- Project management experience with a record of managing, coordinating, and executing a number of complex internal communications projects preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to identify and analyze business and audience needs to deliver messages via the most appropriate mix of communications channels.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.
- Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from leaders, colleagues, investors, and external parties. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Superior ability to write in a journalistic style that is customary for corporate and external publications.
- Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English. Articulates and embraces hospice philosophy. Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations, and other supporting material as needed. Anticipate reputational risk issues and develop and implement appropriate communication actions. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with team members and senior management. Possess a deep understanding of public relations strategy and the ability to turn disparate data points and milestones into timely news. Ability to exercise sound business judgment and strategic skills to assist business partners in prioritizing their communication needs to align with their strategic priorities.
