Position Summary

The Temporary Senior Manager, Internal Communications creates, manages, and strategically guides internal communications for Tides Network employees. Guided by the strategic internal communications plan, the Temporary Senior Manager, Internal Communications ensures that every communication speaks in Tides’ internal voice, upholds Tides’ values, and reinforces a trusting, collaborative culture. Working alongside the Senior Director, Talent, the Temporary Senior Manager, Internal Communications collaborates with the other members of the People, JEDI, Senior Leadership, and Executive teams to ensure alignment between internal communications, our strategic plan, and our broader real-world impact. This is a temporary position expected to begin in mid-August 2024 and end in February 2025.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Internal Communications Strategy + Execution (60%)

  • Project manage internal communications projects end-to-end, including soliciting and integrating input from cross-departmental leaders, moving content through the required review and approval process, and ensuring alignment of every message with Tides’ impact goal, values, and voice
  • Craft proactive communications that align with Tides values and priorities and that are intended to educate and engage staff around organizational priorities/decisions and that build a trusting, collaborative culture
  • Lead internal crisis communications, working in partnership with External Communications, the Executive Team, and Legal, Risk & Compliance to issue urgent, impactful communications to staff on a variety of crisis issues, including world and domestic events, physical safety, risk & compliance, natural disasters, and more
  • Own the project management, editorial direction, and execution of the weekly internal newsletter, including gathering content from multiple sources, editing to a unified voice, sending each edition, and gathering metrics
  • Lead internal executive communications for the full Tides leadership team, including crafting email messages, talking points, scripts, and presentations, and provide the support needed for leadership to deliver these messages effectively and authentically
  • Partner with multiple departments, including the Executive Office, People team, JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion), IT (Information Technology), and Legal, Risk & Compliance (LRC) to create and execute internal communications plans for internal initiatives
  • Lead internal communications strategy for change management efforts, including advocating for best practices to support staff buy-in, adoption, and integration
  • Establish and grow relationships across departments to identify internal communications needs, and create related strategies, programs, and content to address these needs
  • Steward the open sharing of information through the Tidepool (Tides’ intranet) and maintain up-to-date, accurate archives of all internal communications content

All-Staff Meeting Ownership (20%)

  • Set the strategy for, lead the direction of, and project manage virtual monthly all-hands meetings from concept through execution
  • Prepare a recommended monthly agenda in partnership with cross-departmental leaders to present to Executive Leadership and workshop through revisions to approval
  • Integrate Tides’ values and JEDI principles into visual content and talking points while seeking input and content from multiple leaders and project members
  • Partner with the Zoom manager to plan and execute speaker rehearsals, technical run-throughs, and additional preparation as needed to ensure a smooth, compelling meeting
  • Manage Q&A during the meeting utilizing the online platform Slido

Organizational Task Force and People Department Meetings (20%)

  • Serve on key interdepartmental committees, task forces, and groups, leading internal communications for each effort and identifying opportunities to foster transparency, awareness, and change management, and connection between task forces/committees and staff, including:


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Crisis Management Team: advances a culture of collective safety and security through scenario planning, engagement with strategic partners, and staff training
  • Incident Response Team: completes strategic organizational planning to respond to emergency situations by assess the situation and resultant staff needs, and communicating ongoing decisions related to the emergency and its impact on how we work
  • Attend biweekly Talent Team meetings and quarterly People Department meetings to advance shared goals and elevate the visibility and impact of internal communications
  • Proven experience executing a strategic internal communications plan to build culture, create an environment of transparency and open communication between leadership and staff, and inspire and motivate staff to advance our impact goal
  • Strong ability to write and synthesize information to convey main points and next steps using appropriate tone and voice
  • Demonstrated experience in project management, including planning and managing projects both independently and with colleagues
  • Strong organizational change management skills, including creating internal communications plans about new initiatives and changes to support buy-in and understanding for staff
  • Digital, remote-first event organization and execution experience, including event project management, program development, content creation, speaker support, run of show development, and event execution
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize amongst multiple commitments, and to drive multiple high-profile and complex projects simultaneously in a challenging and fluid environment
  • Interest and experiencing in incorporating new and emerging technologies to facilitate internal communications
  • A strong ability to proactively anticipate the need for communications, including crisis communications
  • Proficient with Microsoft Outlook, Office Suite, SharePoint, Asana, Slack, and Slido.
  • Desire and ability to champion Tides’ vision, mission, and North Star in service of our impact goal of shifting and strengthening power for communities who have been historically denied it
  • Ability to grasp, appreciate, and work with cultural nuances, and support and elevate justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion across the organization
  • Comfort engaging staff, building trust, and working with a variety of internal partners, from senior executives and People Team staff to department managers, Employee Resource Groups, and staff committees

Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of related work experience can be substituted for a college degree.
  • 6 years of relevant and applicable experience in internal Human Resources Communications.
  • Experience working in remote first, mission driven environments highly preferred.


Compensation

Tides is committed to providing a competitive compensation package. We value pay equity and account for factors such as your location within the U.S., your skills and your relevant experience, and we will not ask for your salary history. Your starting salary will fall into one of three ranges, depending on your location:

  • National market: $95,300 - $119,100 (Most U.S. states)
  • Moderate market: $103,900 - $129,900 (Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and D.C. metro areas)
  • High market: $114,400 - $143,000 (New York City and San Francisco metro areas)
