Associate Director, Global Medical Communications – Gastroenterology – IBD


About the Role:


This strategic position within Global Medical Affairs involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to manage one or more therapeutic areas or assets on a global scale. The role is responsible for co-developing and executing medical communication plans, including tactics such as core content creation, scientific communication platforms, healthcare professional (HCP) education, congress activities, digital initiatives, and overall communication planning. The role also leads the medical review of promotional and non-promotional materials, applying expertise in medical communications and business acumen to advance the therapeutic area and global communication strategies.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Lead the planning and execution of Global Medical Communications for the assigned therapeutic area.
  • Oversee and be accountable for asset-level medical communication strategies and their implementation.
  • Ensure timely and high-quality delivery of medical communication initiatives aligned with strategic medical plans.
  • Provide scientific leadership and technical expertise within cross-functional teams, contributing to the launch and lifecycle management of the medical unit.
  • Lead and execute various medical communication tactics, including the development of core content (e.g., slide decks), scientific communication platforms, HCP education (e.g., symposia), congress activities (e.g., medical booths), digital initiatives (e.g., webinars), and integrated communication planning.
  • Work closely with leadership to monitor performance goals and the delivery of medical communication plans.
  • Provide mentorship or matrix management for colleagues, fellows, and managers within the global medical communications team.
  • Manage budget, financial forecasting, and vendor relationships for assigned assets.
  • Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:


    • A relevant healthcare degree is required, with a preference for advanced medical or scientific degrees (e.g., MD, PharmD, PhD, RN, MS).
    • At least 5 years of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry for candidates with a doctoral degree, or 7 years for candidates with a master’s degree, preferably in medical affairs roles (e.g., Medical Science Liaison, Medical Information, Medical Communications, Medical Education, Publications).
    • Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to inspire teamwork.
    • Critical thinking skills to navigate complex scenarios and prioritize effectively.
    • In-depth knowledge of medical communication strategies and best practices.
    • Familiarity with international regulatory and legal guidelines related to medical communication.
    • Willingness to travel up to 20% for congresses and offsite meetings.
    • Previous experience in the relevant therapeutic area is a plus.
