Job Summary:

The Assistant Director will be responsible for implementing dynamic retention initiatives designed to improve overall persistence of traditional and nontraditional students at Columbia College. These responsibilities will include providing student success coaching, developing training on strength-based advising/coaching and the use of financial planning tools, conducting retention related workshops for residential campus students. The Assistant Director will assist the leadership team of the Center for Advising, Retention, and Student Success in the implementation of processes, technology, and communications with students, faculty, and staff on student persistence and completion initiatives. They will oversee coaching training for college staff, develop focus groups with select sub-populations, facilitate call campaign efforts, assist in the development of data and predictive modeling resources, and contact students to resolve persistence concerns. The Assistant Director will be the primary support for supervision of front-line CARSS staff and day to day operations.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide student success coaching and intervention for students regarding academic or financial aid concerns that may impact student retention.
  • Supervise 8-10 front-line CARSS staff (ex. advisors, coaches, and student support assistants.
  • Oversee day to day operations including walk-in and phone coverage and relationship reminders within Salesforce.
  • Develop focus groups with select sub-groups to provide information and gain feedback on student success initiatives.
  • Participate in retention-related workshops for students including financial aid literacy and available support programs.
  • Keep current on academic, financial, and support services in order to provide the most accurate information to students.
  • Develop and implement a Student Success coaching model based on strengths-based advising and coaching methods, including training for Columbia College staff.
  • Participate in committees as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills:

  • Ability to fluently read, write and understand the English language.
  • Proficiency with the following, but not limited to: active listening; critical thinking; speaking; oral and written comprehension and expression; judgment and decision making; social perceptiveness; writing; active learning; complex problem solving; service orientation.
  • Proficiency for using a variety of computer and technology-related software and equipment, including Microsoft Office products and database systems.
  • Proficiency for using web-based technologies, including database systems.
  • Ability to work independently or team environment, with or without direct supervision.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, customer service and organizational skills with all constitutients.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously with great attention to detail
  • Ability to Meet deadlines and work independently
  • Working knowledge of student databases and other education software


Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree required

Certification(s):

Experience:

Three to five years’ experience in higher education

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Master’s Degree
  • Experience in student recruitment and retention efforts preferred
  • Experience in higher education setting working with students
  • Experience in student advising
  • Experience in financial aid and/or billing


Special Requirements:

  • Missouri Residents Preferred
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check as a condition of employment, and on an annual basis, during employment
  • Ability to pass a drug test as a condition of employment, and during employment, and on a random basis or as required if probable cause or reasonable suspicion.
  • Some evening or weekend work may be required
