General purpose of the job

Responsible for managing and leading a team of Technical Service Engineers to support cement commercial team customers. Supported by multiple concrete laboratories which have direct oversight by this role, the concrete and masonry laboratories provide product testing to proactively support cement operations to validate product performance to achieve market and customer demands. This role will work closely with Logistics, Commercial, Cement Technical Service, and Manufacturing teams regarding customer satisfaction and regulatory agency acceptance.

Individual Accountabilities

  • Safety leadership in technical areas including management of concrete laboratories aligned with Summit Material’s Mission, Vision and Values.
  • Provide proactive consultation to cement commercial group customers in the areas of product performance, mix optimizations, best practices, technical information research, troubleshooting, and technical training.
  • Manages team of Technical Service Engineers including managers of concrete laboratories and masonry cement laboratories.
  • Act as liaison between sales and production on plant quality teams.
  • Proactively participate in promotion efforts relating to cement based and related products in coordination with Sales team.
  • Coordinate and facilitate competitive analyses for establishment and review of internal quality objectives.
  • Provide internal technical training to the cement commercial sales force.
  • Proactively participate in promotion efforts relating to cement based and related products.
  • Proactive involvement in technical organizations such as the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) as well as various ready-mix concrete organizations with emphasis at the local or regional level.
  • Responsible for updating and implementing Quality Management System (QMS) throughout the organization.
  • Provide guidance and training to Technical Service Engineers and Concrete Laboratory Quality Managers to develop technical skills to ensure consistency and competency within organizational roles.
  • Lead efforts to improve existing products; including research and development of new products to meet current and future market requirements.
  • Support sustainability initiatives such as Environmental Product Declaration.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Concrete Technology, Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering or Materials Engineering, and/or minimum of 10 years in concrete and concrete products quality control industry.

Area Of Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Quality Assurance/Quality Control Manager, Technical Services Engineer or Certified Concrete Technologist in the building materials industries (cement, concrete, admixtures).
  • Technical knowledge of cementitious materials and concrete.
  • Proven ability to understand the technical aspects of a customer’s products, systems and applications.
  • Cement products application technology.
  • Clear understanding of industry standards and codes.
  • Proven incident and problem solving (troubleshooting) skills with an emphasis on timely resolution.
  • Interpersonal skills including conflict resolution.
  • Excellent project management and analytical skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple projects at a time.
  • Ability to follow established process and procedures.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of management.
  • Computer skills: Word, Power Point, Excel.
  • Ability to travel with minimal notice.
  • Travel requirement approximately 50%.
