Sandy Hook Promise (SHP) is a national nonprofit organization with a mission to end school shootings, and create a culture change that prevents violence and other harmful acts that hurt children. Through its life-saving evidence-informed Know the Signs prevention programs, SHP educates and empowers youth and adults to recognize, intervene, and get help for individuals who may be socially isolated and/or at risk of hurting themselves or others. SHP is a moderate, bipartisan organization that supports sensible policy solutions that address the human side of gun violence and make schools safer.

SHP is led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012.

About The Role

SHP is seeking an Associate Vice President to lead the individual giving program while contributing to the highly collaborative, positive, and action-oriented culture. The ideal candidate must have a successful track record of raising funds on a national level, be creative, proactive, open to new ideas, and self-led; has excellent judgment and decision-making skills; and is adept at relationship management with a passion for racial equity and violence prevention. This position reports to the Vice President of Development and has one direct report, the Associate Director of Development.

The preferred homebase for the AVP is California, as the expectation is that travel will be primarily to locations on the West Coast. This position requires approximately 20-30% travel.

Job Responsibilities Include (but Are Not Limited To)

  • Manage a portfolio of major donors as assigned, including 5-, 6- and 7-figure donors
  • Develop and implement dynamic, individualized solicitation strategies reflective of philanthropic trends for existing individual/family donors and prospects in assigned areas
  • Uses and manages a moves management system, in partnership with the VP of Development, thoughtfully and strategically participates in all aspects of donor relationships, including initiating contact, qualifying philanthropic capacity and inclination, preparation of proposals, solicitation, closure, and stewardship
  • In partnership with the VP of Development, lead the strategy and ongoing management of Advisory Board (active participation from various thought leader donors) and Leadership Circle (donor recognition) groups
  • Supports fundraising efforts of leadership and program staff for meetings with prospective donors, including research, talking points, solicitation materials, program updates and follow-up proposals
  • In partnership with Marketing team, manages 4-5 grassroots matching gift campaigns per fiscal year
  • Builds strong relationships internally across the organization, and proactively ensures access to the information needed to solicit gifts and build donor relationships effectively
  • Supervise team member leading the mid-level ($2.5K-9.9K) giving program for the team
  • Supervise team member leading DC gala and assisting with consultant/vendor relationships
  • Lead development of new events, including small-scale cultivation and stewardship events to drive incremental fundraising, with focus on CA and other priority states
  • Assist in the writing and editing of case statements and other fundraising collateral

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Passion for the mission of SHP and a record of collaborative, respectful, inclusive leadership
  • 10+ years progressive experience in non-profit fundraising, including 2+ years in a senior or management role; BA/BS required
  • Exceptional communication skills: listening, verbal, written, and interpersonal
    • Should be able to share 2+ products of writing to include proposals/persuasive writing, cultivation communications, etc
  • Able to take strategic direction from leadership and self-lead to work independently without hands-on coaching, prioritizing projects and proactively seizing opportunities
  • History of successful solicitation and stewardship of +$50,000 gifts
  • History of successful management of small scale and large-scale events
  • Entrepreneurial spirit with the ability to recognize and proactively pursue opportunities and challenges
  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to thrive in and contribute to a fast-paced environment
  • Willingness to take risks with a strong action orientation
  • Experience and ease wearing multiple hats in a highly entrepreneurial and collaborative environment
  • Proficiency with a CRM (SHP uses Salesforce), MS Office, and donor research
Benefits and Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $120,000-130,000.

(SHP follows a strict internal rubric to help guide salary placement and ensure equitable pay amongst new hires and current staff. New hires should expect to be brought on at the start of the range, except in extenuating circumstances.)

Our organization operates within a distributed workforce,allowing for location flexibility across the countryfor most positions.We provideremote office supportfor all staff, which includes a laptop, home office reimbursement, monthly Wi-Fi reimbursement up to $40, and monthly cell phone reimbursement up to $50.
