Position Summary

The Senior Director of Operational Excellence will be responsible for establishing a holistic strategy and operational plan to deploy fit for purpose Lean/Six Sigma capabilities which empower and catalyze our continuous improvement culture, improve execution, increase operational efficiencies and transform the ways we serve our customers in at Illumina.

The Senior Director collaborates with cross-functional leaders and teams within Illumina to develop and implement continuous improvement strategies aligned with organizational goals and regulatory requirements. The key areas of responsibility include development and implementation of the strategy and appropriate business systems, expanding training and capability across the workforce, management of large-scale improvement efforts, drive productivity/operational efficiencies and oversight of the Illumina Excellence team.

The scope of this role includes Operational Excellence deployment for functions within Illumina including but not limited to: R&D, Operations, Supply Chain, Quality, Human Resources, Finance, IT etc.

Responsibilities

Strategy and Leadership:

  • Lead a World Class Operational Excellence team. Lead the Lean Steering committee. Influence across the cross-functional team to ensure high level goals and objectives are being met.
  • Build a compelling 3-5 year roadmap of process/system improvements and chart a path to execute against that roadmap and vision.
  • Align priorities across all Functions in Illumina and partner with leadership to ensure Functional roadmaps are harmonized with the overall Operational Excellence Roadmap
  • Demonstrate the ability to balance longer term strategic thinking against more tactical execution of shorter-term deliverables.
  • Develop and coach key talent. Lead by example and display Illumina Leadership Values.
  • Create a working environment that supports the ongoing professional growth and development of all staff, high morale, and optimal job satisfaction
  • Lead and mentor a team of performance improvement professionals/leaders, including performance improvement consultants, analysts, and project managers, to drive continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Ensures best practice adoption within stated areas of responsibility, applying appropriate levels of technical capability, standardization and subject matter expertise
  • Oversees the design and implementation of a comprehensive Lean/Six Sigma training and education program
  • Stay current with current industry trends and technologies to keep Illumina at the forefront of continuous improvement best practices; develop and nurture external relationships ensuring Illumina’s approach reflects thought leadership from inside and outside the organization.

Driving Continuous Improvement Across Illumina

  • Lead & develop enterprise approach to operational excellence
  • Partner with functional leaders and multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement performance improvement projects
  • Design and implement performance measurement systems, dashboards, and scorecards to monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and track progress towards organizational goals
  • Drive change management initiatives to ensure successful implementation and adoption of performance improvement initiatives, including stakeholder engagement, communication, and change management
  • Guides the build and spread of a continuous improvement operating model that is responsive to the organization’s most critical priorities
  • Actively supports use of concepts such as Lean, Six Sigma, Design Thinking, Agile/Scrum, data visualization, daily management and change management strategies, etc.

Requirements & Education

  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in technical/quantitative field Preferred: PhD / MBA / MS Preferred Area of Study: Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics
  • Required: 20 years of experience. 10 years in business process transformation/Operational Excellence deployment and 12+ years of Management experience
  • Preferred: 10 years of experience from within a regulated healthcare environment.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Strong leader with the ability to establish clear strategy that can inspire others to deliver and influence to drive change across the organization
  • Demonstrated experience in driving continuous improvement culture and operating system across an enterprise and ability to navigate and influence across all levels of an organization, translating strategic vision into tangible outcomes
  • Lean Six Sigma Blackbelt/Master Blackbelt
  • Ability to interact effectively in a complex organization and in ambiguous situations; ability to manage sensitive situations with exceptional judgment and discretion
  • Consistent track record of collaboration, including the ability to work with cross-functional teams, and across complex ecosystems
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills (including articulating \ vision, inspiring teams, and presenting to senior executives).
  • Strong sector AND enterprise mindset & strong business/financial acumen
  • Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills required
  • Excellent stakeholder management and networking skills required

The estimated base salary range for the Senior Director Operational Excellence role based in the United States of America is: $201,100 - $301,700. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
