After-School Program Teacher Aide Contractual Position

Main Purpose of Job

The After School Program Teacher Aide's responsibility is to design, plan, and implement a comprehensive, educational after school program in order to promote the physical, cognitive, mental, emotional, and social behavioral growth of Deaf students and Deaf students.

POSITION DUTIES

The After School Program (ASP) Teacher Aides use American Sign Language (ASL) as the primary means of communication with students to facilitate the learning process on a daily basis and must work with the students to ensure their needs are adequately met on a daily basis. They prep, help, plan, and implement daily activities. They are responsible to check with school secretary for daily ASP attendance, parent notes, and make sure students are picked up accordingly. Throughout ASP, they are responsible for activities, supervision, safety, and conflict intervention/ resolution of all students involved. If a field trip is arranged, they are responsible to drive students there, supervise, and drive them back to school. At the end of each day, they are responsible for cleaning up After School Program area or other sites used before getting off from work. When necessary, they are responsible to communicate with parents of After School Program students of their upcoming activities, or daily behavior.

Minimum Qualifications

Education : High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience : Fluency in ASL and written English required. Knowledge of Deaf Community preferred. Experience in working with deaf and hard of hearing students desired. Knowledge of students with additional disabilities and ability to teach students on different levels and with varying educational background required.

Special Requirements

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense. (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568)

Benefits

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
