Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Managing Director of Impact (MDI), the Senior Program Director (SPD) is responsible for the overall management and execution of the day-to-day programmatic operations. In collaboration with the Program and Service Leadership Team the SPD is responsible for meeting all departmental goals. The SPD supervises 4-5 Program Directors who manage 12+ Program Managers, and 22+ school partner relationships where we deploy nearly 200+ AmeriCorps Members (ACMs) into national service.


The SPD is an effective manager and talent developer who can coach staff so they can in turn enable ACMs to have a rewarding, productive, professional, and successful year of service. They are responsible for working to promote the long-term sustainability of the site, fostering strategic relationships with various stakeholders, serving on committees, and providing insight and vision as a resource catalyst. The SPD also serves on the site Leadership Team to support in strategic planning for events, initiatives, and retreats to foster interdepartmental collaboration and organizational leadership.



Job Description

Program Staff Management

  • Directly coach, manage, and develop Program Directors (PDs) through weekly team meetings, one-on-ones, site visits to schools, performance reviews, and ongoing support that identifies growth areas and opportunities.
  • Create vision and build systems for the PD Team to facilitate collaboration, decision making, and alignment.
  • Empower team setting clear expectations, effectively communicating, providing ongoing guidance and accountability, as well as individual and group coaching, to meet goals and administrative deadlines.
  • Develop strategy and scope and sequence for PD management and leadership development.
  • Lead the PD team to create and implement PM management and development scope and sequence.
  • Manage and coach PD team ensuring strong team culture, management practices, AmeriCorps and site compliance through all layers of the program team.
  • Ensure strong feedback loops across the program team, including regular skip level and direct feedback.


Service Impact & Evaluation

  • Collaborate with Senior Service Director to support program design, service quality, and data collection.
  • Track PD portfolios to ensure data, deliverables, team progress, observations, and general service implementation and delivery is on track to meet end of year goals.
  • Problem solve and determine course of action with PDs to ensure quality of day-to-day service implementation across all schools
  • Work directly with the Senior Service Director and Impact Analytics team to support PDs and PMs in creation of school deployments.


Partner Relationship Management

  • Maintain relationships with school principals to build sustainable and transformational partnerships across all portfolio of schools.
  • Oversee PD relationships with principals and school liaisons and serve as supervisory contact.
  • Establish presence during any City Year and/or school crises and ensure proper protocols are understood and followed.
  • Work alongside with the Managing Director of Impact to support PDs to develop strategy to secure continuation of school funding allocations.
  • Manage work order, purchase order, and invoicing coordinating with LAUSD procurement and CY HQ.


AmeriCorps Member Management, Training, & Development

  • In collaboration with Government Relations team, maintain site’s adherence to standards and national programmatic baselines.
  • Collaborate with ACME Director and People team to determine necessary support for AmeriCorps member accommodations requests.
  • Collaborate with PDs, ACME team, and MDI to support complex AmeriCorps Member experience related needs and issues.
  • Meet as needed with PMs and AmeriCorps members regarding team management, accountability, and standards issues, and manage disciplinary action in collaboration with MDI and People team.
  • Support director and manager team in ensuring incident and mandated reports are handled appropriately, documentation is submitted timely and accurately, and ensure necessary follow up has occurred.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Service Director to ensure shared understanding and action-planning regarding AmeriCorps members’ professional development needs.
  • Consult with the Managing Director of Impact, Senior Service Director, ACME Director and Learning & Instruction Director to develop trainings and training vision for the staff and AmeriCorps members.


Organizational Initiatives & Site Support

  • In partnership with the People team own hiring Program Directors and Program Managers to build and retain a high-performing program staff.
  • Lead the Senior Manager track, executing on the interview process and professional development plan.
  • Partner with the Senior Service Director to co-own the process for new and returning staff onboarding and ongoing learning and development needs.
  • Collaborate with ACME director to align on strategy for recruiting Returning AmeriCorps members,
  • As a member of the site’s Leadership Team, advance the site's vision and goals, increase the quality of collaboration and alignment between departments and with national service team, and critically examine the direction of the organization to facilitate and support policy changes.
  • Partner with City Year Los Angeles departments and staff through stakeholder engagement, event and service day participation and cross-departmental committees as needed to ensure site-wide goals are met.

  • 7-10+ years of work experience.
  • Minimum 5+ years of team management with a strong track record of results:
  • Setting high expectations and holding self and team accountable for performance goals

  • Using progress and outcome data to inform team management
  • Candidates with a background in education preferred.
  • Commitment to and experience with community service, national service and/or the development of young people as leaders.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, plan ahead, and manage competing priorities in a fast paced and diverse team environment.
  • Tenacity and flexibility in the face of challenges; working in high-need environments.
  • Experience setting-up structures for effective teams and ability to delegate effectively and appropriately.
  • Strong track record in building and maintaining productive relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation and valid Driver’s License.
  • Occasional travel required.
