Position Overview

The Instructional Coach will support the academic strategy and model that enables City Year sites to reach school and student outcome goals and consistently strive toward equity in the education system. Key outcomes for the Instructional Coach are: Create instructional learning experiences for AmeriCorps members (ACMs) and staff that build the skills and knowledge necessary to reach school and student outcome measures; Support and implement an inclusive & equitable academic strategy and model for the Tier One and Tier Two spaces that ensures we reach our student outcome measures in math and literacy; while incorporating our diversity, belonging, inclusivity and equity policy work; Serve as an active member of the CY community in order to advance the site and work toward the Long-Term Impact Strategy.


Job Description

Supervise the Teaching Fellowships Program (25%)

  • Regularly observe and coach Teaching Fellows in order to improve their practitioner skills, their impact on student achievement, and their growth as educators.
  • Regularly check-in with Teaching Fellows about their strengths, areas of growth, progress towards goals, and supports needed. Encourage self-reflective practices and provide support and resources.
  • Design and facilitate resident learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with Managing Director of Impact to ensure connection points are occurring across City Year, teaching fellow programs, and individual AmeriCorps Member experiences.
  • Collaborate with national Teaching Fellowships team to identify and implement key actions steps to move the program forward.
  • Lead recruitment and selection of new teaching fellows from the network of current AmeriCorps Members.
  • Engage in other long-term projects (e.g. Elementary expansion, evaluation metric design, Promising practices community).


AmeriCorps Member Observation and Coaching (50%)

  • Provide observation and coaching support to AmeriCorps members at 4 schools serving in grades 3-9 in order to improve their practitioner skills and impact on engagement in learning, social-emotional development, and academic outcomes.
  • Support Impact Managers and Team Leaders in the development of AmeriCorps members through co-observations and co-coaching sessions, trainings, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Continue to refine CYD’s observation and coaching model, including the overall protocol, a comprehensive set of tools and trackers, and a clear accountability system.


AmeriCorps Member Learning and Development (15%)

  • Design and facilitate high-quality and innovative trainings for AmeriCorps members focused on increasing student engagement, building strong relationships, integrating social emotional development, tutoring math and literacy, utilizing effective instructional strategies, operating with cultural humility, implementing culturally and linguistically sustaining practices, and supporting multilingual students.


Modeling and Supporting Data-Informed Practices for AmeriCorps Members (10%)

  • Support AmeriCorps members and team leadership with understanding and responding to student-level data to help improve and inform student supports. Support teams in working with students to identify their areas of strength and opportunities for growth and action plan in response.
  • Evaluate and analyze observation and coaching data and feedback from school partners, AmeriCorps members, and City Year staff members to identify needs and implement data-informed adjustments.



Skills & Qualifications - Required

  • You have at least 3 years, preferably more, of experience and demonstrated expertise as a certified classroom teacher.
  • You have at least 2 years, preferably more, of experience and demonstrated expertise as an instructional coach.
  • You have demonstrated experience designing and/or leading trainings for adult learners.
  • You are eager to support AmeriCorps members serving in grades 3-9 in all subject areas.
  • You have demonstrated experience building successful relationships with students.
  • You have demonstrated success in differentiating instruction for diverse learners and improving student achievement.
  • You recognize the importance of an integrated approach to academics and socio-emotional development.
  • You have experience analyzing and responding effectively to student-level data.
  • You believe that relationship-building and partnerships are essential for our work. You value opportunities for collaboration. You know when to seek guidance and get diverse input for decisions.
  • You collaboratively problem solve when challenges arise.
  • You convey thoughts and ideas clearly and communicate effectively in a solution-oriented manner.
  • You demonstrate a strong attention to detail and proven organizational and project management skills.
  • You enjoy new challenges and self-directed learning and development.
  • You have the ability to stay up-to-date on current best practices in education.
  • You love working with diverse teams and stakeholders committed to expanding educational opportunities in Detroit and advancing social justice.


Skills & Qualifications – Preferred

  • You have experience and demonstrated expertise as an Instructional Coach.
  • You have a strong knowledge of literacy and/or mathematics. You have knowledge of Common Core Mathematics and/or English Language Arts and Literacy Standards.
  • You have experience teaching in city schools.
  • You have a special education license, experience, and/or expertise.
