The Role

As the Sr. Director of Robotics Software Systems at Moderna, you will be responsible for driving the technical vision, development, and implementation of robotics software systems for drug research, development, and manufacturing. You will lead a team of talented software engineers and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to optimize efficiency, improve quality, and accelerate the production of life-saving therapeutics through the application of cutting-edge robotics software.

Here’s What You’ll Do

  • Technical Strategy Development: Develop and execute a comprehensive technical strategy for robotics software systems in drug research, development, and manufacturing. Identify opportunities for automation, process optimization, and quality enhancement through the application of robotics software solutions.
  • Technical Leadership and Team Management: Lead a team of robotics software experts, engineers, and project managers, providing technical guidance, mentorship, and support. Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement to ensure the team's success.
  • Technology Evaluation and Adoption: Stay at the forefront of robotics software systems advancements, evaluate their potential impact on drug research, development, and manufacturing processes, and make informed decisions regarding their adoption. Collaborate with internal and external partners to identify and implement cutting-edge solutions.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate closely with research, development, process engineering, quality assurance, and manufacturing teams to understand their technical requirements and develop robotics software systems that address operational challenges and drive efficiency.
  • Project Management: Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of robotics software system projects, ensuring they are completed within budget, on time, and meet quality standards. Monitor project progress, identify technical risks, and implement mitigation strategies as necessary.
  • Technical Budgeting and Resource Allocation: Develop and manage the technical budget for the robotics software systems department, allocating resources effectively to support project initiatives and achieve strategic goals.
  • Project Execution: Direct involvement in the architectural decisions and active coding, especially during critical project phases or when prototyping new solutions.
  • Technical Thought Leadership: Represent Moderna at technical conferences, events, and forums, sharing insights and best practices related to robotics software systems in drug research, development, and manufacturing. Stay connected with the robotics software community and contribute to the advancement of the field.


Here’s What You’ll Need (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Engineering, or a related technical field. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Extensive technical experience (15+ years) in robotics software development, automation, or related fields, with a proven track record of successfully leading large-scale robotics software system projects in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.

  • Strong technical leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and guide teams to achieve ambitious technical goals.
  • Deep technical understanding of robotics software systems, including automation, control systems, data integration, and machine learning algorithms.
  • Experience in developing and executing technical strategies for robotics software systems in a complex, regulated environment.
  • Excellent technical project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a data-driven approach to technical decision-making.
  • Proven ability to develop and optimize algorithms related to machine learning, computer vision, and control systems for robotics.
  • Proficiency in designing scalable and robust software architectures using modern software engineering practices and tools (e.g., microservices architecture)
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with technical stakeholders at all levels.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant regulations and standards related to robotics software systems in drug research, development, and manufacturing.
