VISTA Assignment: Non-Profit Development (Recruitment)

(Compton, CA)

YouthBuild VISTA Goal: To increase the number of YouthBuild students advancing academically, earning a high school diploma or equivalency, succeeding in college, and or gaining employment.

The objective of VISTA Assignment: Our program requires assistance in raising awareness so that more young people and programs that serve them will be exposed to the opportunities available at Compton YouthBuild.

Activity 1: Conduct a Needs Assessment

Step 1: Identify recruitment goals and set recruitment benchmarks and a timeline

Step 2: Conduct research to identify and document recruitment trends over the past few years.

Step 3: Develop and conduct a survey of staff and members to identify best practices and challenges related to recent recruitment efforts.

Step 4: Assess current opportunities and identify needs in order to meet recruitment goals and benchmarks established in Step 1 (if necessary, revise these goals).

Step 5: Document research and analysis into a final recruitment needs assessment.

Step 6: Collect and review best practices from YouthBuild USA (YBUSA) website and YouthBuild (YB) programs throughout the country focusing on recruitment strategies.

Step 7: Assist staff in the design of recruitment flyers, brochures, and marketing materials for recruitment

Outcomes

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the role within all program departments.
  • A ‘Recruitment Needs Assessment for the organization.
  • Research binder that includes recruitment trends.
  • Staff/Member Best Practices Survey.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of YouthBuild USA recruitment strategies.

Activity 2: Develop Recruitment Partnerships

Step 1: Research and assess current and potential partners. Research the history and background of current and potential partners.

Step 2: Create a “map of partners”, summarizing history, and how the partnership could benefit recruitment efforts.

Step 3: Create a strategy to deepen current partnerships and initiate new partnerships:

  • Identify the appropriate staff and faculty to engage
  • Outline the benefits YouthBuild has to offer to the postsecondary institution partner.
  • Develop a set of questions and agenda items for the prospective partner.

Step 4: Coordinate appropriate follow-up activities.

Step 5: Assess the needs of the YouthBuild program and the partnering organization, and identify activities or services that each program could provide to the other.

Step 6: Involve relevant program staff and identify staff who will be responsible for executing the work required for the partnership to develop.

Outcomes

  • Gain an understanding of current and potential partnerships.
  • Create a “Map of Partners” binder.
  • Create a strategic plan to deepen current partnerships and initiate new ones.

Activity 3: Create, design, and evaluate communication materials

Step 1: Create a recruitment calendar, working backward to identify key dates, deadlines, and benchmarks.

Step 2: Create print materials to be used for recruitment efforts.

Step 3: Evaluate the effectiveness of social media and print materials. Write an evaluative report.

Step 4: Design and manage a social media recruitment strategy covering Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, etc. Work closely with Fund Development VISTA to ensure there are no conflicting messages.

Outcomes

  • Create a “Recruitment Calendar”.
  • Create updated marketing materials.
  • Provide a “Social Media Evaluation”.
  • Assist in designing and implementing a Social Media Recruitment Strategy.

Activity 4: Plan and Coordinate Recruitment Events

Step 1: Identify the target audience for the event and design an event according to the interests/ needs of that group (young people, parents, partners).

Step 2: Create a survey to gather input and feedback from staff regarding possible events.

Step 3: Collaborate with Executive Directors to identify a date and time for the event.

Step 4: Draft a budget and agenda for the event.

Step 5: Write an evaluative report documenting the steps taken to implement the event and identify successes and future opportunities.

Outcomes

  • Plan and Execute a Recruitment event.
  • Conduct “Event Survey”.
  • Create an Event Budget and items needed list.
  • Provide an event “Evaluation Report”.
