We produce high-quality and independent content and journalism   on our website and across multiple digital and social channels, as well as in e-newsletters. MedShadow operates free of any pharmaceutical funding or influence. We reach millions, empowering people to make fully informed decisions using science-based research and expert guidance. 


Job Description


MedShadow Foundation has entered a moment of dynamic growth, with a new Executive Director at the helm. We are seeking a Head of Content to lead, oversee and manage our content creation across digital channels (website, video, social media, newsletters), in close coordination with the strategic direction of the Executive Director, to whom this position reports. The winning candidate will have both an excellent reputation and track record in health journalism; a thirst to uncover compelling stories and  provide guidance to the public, and influence policy and regulation in the drug safety space. You will also have proven success in using audience data analytics in order to grow audience reach and engagement. You will be particularly motivated by the unique role of mission-driven content inside an advocacy nonprofit setting.


Content Responsibilities:

  • Produce high-quality, engaging digital health content on respected consumer sites for at least 5 years; have a proven track record of success 
  • Expert editor of sophisticated health and medical information about RX and OTC drugs that appeals and helps a lay audience
  • Bring a reputation for accuracy and integrity in health journalism, with a keen understanding of clinical study protocols and workings of research journals
  • Strong relationships with leading medical institutions & experts
  • Proficiency with diverse journalistic storytelling formats, including service, explanatory, investigative and opinion
  • Generate strong story angles that are unique to MedShadow’s mission 
  • Develop and pursue content and user options that can potentially generate revenue, such as a program of paid e-newsletters 
  • Stay abreast of all manner of consumer and public health policy news and trends related to RX and OTC drugs, including clinical trials, R&D, side effects, ad spending, regulation, etc. 
  • Success at re-interpreting core content into formats for carousels, infographics, video, podcast concepts, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with the marketing team 
  • Maintain a keen understanding of the competitive marketplace for MedShadow


Website curation and management:

  • Track website content and social media metrics, in creative collaboration with audience data analysts, using such tools such as GA, SEMRush, Parse.ly or Chartbeat, to leverage insights for audience growth and engagement
  • Ability to probe, interrogate, iterate, and execute on data insights to generate creative content variations that result in audience engagement and growth 
  • Establish a process to communicate metrics and audience insights to the content team, alongside data analysts, in order to grow traffic while staying true to MedShadow’s mission 
  • Implement SEO best practices in a disciplined way to grow traffic and reach
  • Tailor content offering using audience segmentation and personas 
  • Contribute UX/UI ideas to achieve a highly engaging website experience
  • Collaborate with MedShadow’s IT manager to make ongoing improvements 


Additional Responsibilities

  • Ideate, assign, & edit all stories for the site, and meet deadlines 
  • Write and report stories as needed
  • Maintain and optimize a content calendar & all related meetings
  • Manage fact checking, medical vetting, and sourcing process
  • Recruit and nurture a stable of high-quality health writers
  • Nurture and grow the medical advisory board, in conjunction with Executive Director
  • Work within budget 
  • Work in close collaboration with the Executive Director 


Qualifications:

  • Must be based in NYC metro area in order to attend occasional in-person meetings 
  • Background in health journalism with a strong understanding of OTC and RX drug topics, and how to make these accessible to lay readers 
  • Proficiency in Wordpress (or similar CMS) and multi-channel content production workflows
  • Facility with project management tools such as ClickUp or SmartSheet 
  • Proven success as a team manager focusing on staff growth, retention and performance optimization
  • Must be comfortable in small, entrepreneurial environment
